Understanding the Sungano: A Pillar of the ZCC

Did you know that Rev. Samuel Mutendi, the visionary founder of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), established the Sungano (Men’s Wing) as a cornerstone of the church?

The word Sungano means "covenant" in Shona, symbolizing a deep commitment to God, the church, and family. Inspired by Shona cultural values and Zionist traditions, Rev. Mutendi formalized this fellowship to empower men to take on key roles in worship, leadership, and community life.

Sungano members were entrusted with keeping order during services, supporting healing ministries, building and maintaining worship spaces, and serving as role models of moral discipline. They were also instrumental in spreading the gospel, planting new congregations, and mentoring younger men.

Rev. Mutendi emphasized values like hard work, marital faithfulness, sobriety, and respect for elders. Sungano became a brotherhood that upheld these principles while standing as a spiritual and social backbone for the ZCC.

Today, Sungano remains a vital force in the church’s mission of faith and community service.

Since the days of Rev. Samuel Mutendi, the (Women’s Wing) has been the heartbeat of the ZCC, lighting the way with prayer, fasting, generosity, and unity.

Deeply rooted in faith and community, these incredible women continue to uphold and champion the church’s foundational values. Through evangelism, spiritual guidance in families, upholding ritual purity, and passing on sacred values within households, they remain pillars of strength.

Gathering every Wednesday, they embody a profound legacy of faith, dedication, and service!
