“Alone we can do so little. Together we do so much”. This saying is true of the church which is referred to, amongst others, as the family of God and the body of Christ. Our lives affect one another and the decisions we make will impact those around us. This lesson examines what living like a family of many parts practically looks like, learning from the example of three minor characters in the Bible.

Two Years Ago: "Some sneak peeks of the 'work in progress' for Monica’s Little People Day Care Centre. This project is more than a physical building – it is a conduit for God’s compassion and a source of hope in a very poor community in Motherwell."

"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8)

In direct contrast to God's cycle of grace, the cycle of performance is about achieving things in order to feel significant and accepted, a paradigm that many people are caught up in.

God has created us to have healthy rhythms of work and rest as His image bearers, and not be caught up in the busyness of our world. What are some practical things you can do to avoid being sucked into and formed by the Cycle of Performance?

We each face a choice to live according to the Cycle of Performance or the Cycle of Grace. This is true of how we serve in the church, and how we go about out life in general. Many of us are caught up in the Cycle of Performance, driven to achieve things in order to gain acceptance. This often leads to anxiety, stress, damaged relationships and burnout. Yet God offers us a much healthier and fulfilling way to live – the way of grace.

In this lesson we learn about two opposing patterns of human living and spiritual effort – the cycles of grace and works. The Cycle of Grace starts by knowing we are deeply loved and accepted by God as we are, while the Cycle of Works (which characterises the world in which we live) is grounded in trying hard to accomplish tasks, leading to exhaustion and burnout.
