6. THE GIFT OF TONGUES IS NOT THE SAME AS TONGUES FOR PERSONAL EDIFICATION

i. The Gift of Tongues is a result of the anointing UPON; and is God speaking to man.

Whereas the believer's personal tongue is as a result of the anointing WITHIN; and is man speaking to God.

ii. The Gift of Tongues is a public utterance.

Whereas, the believer's personal tongue is for private worship and edification.

iii. The Gift of Tongues brings public encouragement or direction (if given by a prophet).

Whereas the believer's personal tongue brings personal edification and direction.

iv. The Gifts of Tongues is not always in manifestation.

However, the believer can speak in their personal tongue at any time.

5. THE BELIEVER'S PERSONAL GIFT OF TONGUES

Acts 2:4 (NKJV)
"And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

The gift of tongues is the God-given ability to speak in a language not learned or understood by the speaker, and (mostly) not understood by the hearers.

We receive the gift of tongues when we are baptized with the Holy Spirit.

"tongues" - "glossa" (Strong's #1100), "the tongue, a member of the body, the organ of speech"

i. Luke the physician, who wrote the Book of Acts, called it "other tongues", as the believers were given a language "other" than their native or learned languages.

ii. The King James Version calls the gift of tongues "unknown tongues", because it is unknown to the speaker, and (mostly) unknown to the hearers.

iii. Paul referred to the gift of tongues as "tongues of angels."

1 Corinthians 13:1 (NKJV)
"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. "

a. The believer's personal tongue is used to speak directly to God

1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)
"For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. "

When a believer speaks in tongues they are speaking directly to God from their own spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (NKJV)
"For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding."

In our personal devotions we can "speak" (pray) and we can "sing" in tongues.

b. The believer's personal tongue is used to built them up in their faith

Jude 20 (NKJV)�"But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. "

c. The believer can ask God for the interpretation of their tongue
1 Corinthians 14:13 (NKJV)
"Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret."

In this passage of Scripture Paul was referring to the believer's personal "tongues." He encouraged them to ask God for the interpretation of what we are praying.

4. THREE LEVELS OF PROPHECY THAT CAN FUNCTION IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

Romans 12:6 (NKJV)
"Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith. "

According to the grace (gift, we have received; there is given a corresponding anointing and faith to operate in that gift, and on that level. We are to prophesy in proportion to the faith, which we have.

When prophesying, we should not go beyond the level of the gift, and the proportion of faith.

With each level of prophecy, there is a higher level of grace (anointing) in operation.

a. The First Level of Prophecy
Brings edification, exhortation, and comfort.

b. The Second Level of Prophecy
A believer who has the motivational gift of prophecy. (Romans 12:6)

c. The Third Level of Prophecy

A five-fold Ministry prophet who brings the word of the Lord.
At this level, the prophet can speak of things in the future; this would include:

i. Direction for a person's life
ii. Insight into a person's gifts and calling
iii. Warning of danger ahead

If a prophecy gives future direction, it should confirm or witness in the heart of the person who received the prophecy.

Before someone gives a Word of Wisdom, they need to be sure they have heard from God.
A wrong "word" can cause a lot of damage.

We can all operate in the simple gift of prophecy and bring edification, exhortation and comfort where no revelation gift is required to function.

If a prophet prophesies of danger that lies ahead, that would be a prophetic word on a higher level, which includes the Word of Wisdom.

d. The New Testament believer is led by the Spirit not by prophecy
Romans 8:14 (NKJV)
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God."

Christians are to:

i. Live by the written Word of God.
ii. Follow the leading of the Spirit through the inner witness.
iii. Be guided by those whom the Lord has placed over them.

e. God desires all believers to prophesy

1 Corinthians 14:1,5 (NKJV)
"Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy... I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied ...

1 Corinthians 14:31 (NKJV)
"For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged."

1 Corinthians 14:39 (NKJV)
"Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. "

According to these Scriptures:
i. Every believer can, and should earnestly desire to prophesy. ii. Every believer can learn to prophesy.

f. We are instructed to judge Prophecy
1 Corinthians 14:33 (NIV)
"For God is not a God of disorder but of peace-as in all the congregations of the Lord's people. "

Paul cautioned the Corinthian church against the overuse and disorderly use of the gifts.
He told them to allow two or three people to prophesy, while the others judge the prophecy.

1 Corinthians 14:29 (NKJV)
"Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge."

“…while the rest pay attention and weigh and discern what is said."

When a Christian gives a word of prophecy, they have to be open to have what they have said judged to gauge whether the word is from the spirit or from the soulish realm.

1 Corinthians 14:40 (NKJV)
"Let all things be done decently and in order."

i. How to judge or test prophecy?
* Prophecy should bring "edification, exhortation and comfort."
* Prophecy should not bring people into bo***ge or fear.�If someone prophesies doom and gloom, failure, or criticism, it is not a prophecy from God.
* Prophecy must be in line with the written Word of God.
* Prophecy should be given in the "right spirit."

ii. The character of the person prophesying should be examined
* Is Jesus the focus in the life of the person who is prophesying?
* The fruit of the spirit should be evident in the life of the person prophesying.
* The person prophesying should be submitted to the leadership of the Church.
* The person prophesying should have a good track record.

g. How do we begin to prophesy?

Job 32:18-20 (NKJV)
"For I am full of words; The spirit within me compels me. Indeed my belly is like w**e that has no vent; It is ready to burst like new w**eskins. I will speak, that I may find relief; I must open my lips and answer."

i. Wait for an appropriate time in a meeting. (Not limited to meeting)
ii. There will be a stirring in our inner man (our spirit) to prophesy.
There will be a desire to speak a "word" - this "word" comes from the Holy Spirit to our spirit.
iii. Typically the person is given one or two words or a sentence.
As they begin to speak, more words will come.
iv. After the word of edification, exhortation or comfort is given, the anointing lifts, and prophetic utterance will finish.

h. The spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet.

1 Corinthians 14:29-33 (NKJV)
"Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. "

The spirit of the prophet is always subject to the prophet, and the spirit of prophecy is always subject to those who prophesy.

The Holy Spirit leads or urges people to speak a word of prophecy, however, He will not force anyone to speak.

No one who prophesies can claim that the Spirit made them prophesy at a given time, or place.

Example 1.

When the pastor is teaching the Word of God, it is out of order for someone to interrupt the message and begin to bring a word of prophecy! God does not interrupt Himself!

Example 2. Two Levels of Prophecy in the New Testament

Acts 21:8-11 (NKJV)
"On the next day we who were Paul's companions departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied. And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. When he had come to us, he took Paul's belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, 'So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. "

Paul and his companions were led to go to Caesarea, on the west coast of Israel. Philip had four virgin daughters who operated in the Gift of Prophecy.

Later, when the prophet Agabus arrived, he took Paul's belt, bound his hands and feet, and said the Jews at Jerusalem would "bind the man who owned this belt, and hand him over to the Gentiles.

The four daughters had not prophesied this because they did not stand in the office of prophet - they prophesied comfort, exhortation, and encouragement.

3. A DESCRIPTION OF THE GIFT OF PROPHECY

1 Corinthians 14:3 (NKJV)
"But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men."

The Bible says that all Scripture is "prophecy" in a general sense.

Unlike Old Testament prophecy that was largely foretelling, the New Testament gift of prophecy is for:

a. Edification, exhortation and comfort for God's people.

i. Edification (building up, strengthening)
ii.Exhortation(encouragement, refreshing)�iii. Comfort (to calm and console)

b. Prophecy will always line up with the written Word of God.
c. Prophecy is given to a person, to the Church, or to a nation.
d. The simple gift of prophecy contains no element of future telling.
e. The gift of Prophecy can be the channel for the other Manifestation Gifts to operate.
Example. A Prophecy may include the Word of Knowledge or the Word of Wisdom (foretelling)

In the previous two sessions we have discussed the Revelation Gifts as well as the Power Gifts.

In this session we will look at the three Utterance Gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:7-10 (NKJV)
"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues."

2. AN OVERVIEW OF THE THREE UTTERANCE GIFTS

The three Utterance Gifts are:

i. Gift of Prophecy
ii. Gift of Different Kinds of Tongues
iii. Gift of Interpretation of Tongues

a. The three UTTERANCE Gifts SAY something
"Utterance" meaning, "something spoken." We could also call them Vocal Gifts.

i. The Gift of Prophecy:
is for edification, exhortation and comfort.

ii. The Gifts of Tongues:
God speaking a message to man through a believer.

iii. Interpretation of Tongues:
brings the interpretation of the message in tongues.

The Utterance, or Vocal gifts are the most common gifts to operate in the Body of Christ.

These gifts can be misunderstood and misused.

An example of this is seen in the Corinthian Church where Paul had to correct the excessive and disorderly use of the Utterance gifts in their gatherings.
