TITLE: UNDERSTANDING THE GREAT COMMISSION (*TEACHING*) - PART 22

Matthew 28:18-20
[18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
[19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
[20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

In our previous discourse, we learnt that teaching is God's way of making disciples. We saw how in Acts 11:26, Paul and Barnabas were able to make disciples of Christ within a year, through the teaching of God's word.

In our study today, we will be looking at the transformative power of teaching the word of God in the making of disciples. In Hebrews 4:12 and it reads, "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pe*****tes even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart". We know that man is three dimensional; spirit, soul and body. The spirit and the soul are the unseen part of man referred in the Bible as the inner man. The body is the part of man that we can see. This part of man is the outward man (2 Cor 4:16). The writer of Hebrews teaches us that the word of God is able to pe*****te into our spirit, soul and body. This is how potent and efficacious the word of God is. It can recreate the spirit, restore the soul and heal the body. This is the transformative power of the word of God.

Through the avenue of teaching, we come under the influence of the power of God's word. And as we yield our whole being to the word continually, we are effortlessly transformed into its truths. We gradually begin to think like the word, talk and act like the word. Behaviours are corrected, addictions broken and our lives transformed inside out. This is how the teaching of the word makes disciples of Christ. So when Jesus instructed us to go into the world and teach all nations, He gave us the most powerful transforming tool that can effect changes in our lives and that of others and align all of mankind into God's plan for their life in salvation and in the knowledge of the truth. I encourage you to be intentional about studying your Bible and the teaching ministry in your local church, because in your transformation is the transformation of the world around you. In your discipling is the discipling of your sphere of contact.
You are God's change agent in your world.

Blessed?

Let's Pray
Father, your word dominates my life. I Give myself to its truths in my personal study and in my local church. I thank you for the effortless transformation occuring in my life daily through the potency of your word in Jesus' name. Amen

TITLE: UNDERSTANDING THE GREAT COMMISSION (*TEACHING*) - PART 20

Matthew 28:18-20
[18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
[19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
[20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

In our study today, we will be looking at a very important word in disciple making. It is what fulfills discipleship. One cannot be a disciple without it, neither can he make disciples without it. I will say, it is the most important word in Jesus' instruction to go and make disciples of the nations.

In verse 20 of our opening text, Jesus said "and teaching them...". Teaching is the key word in the discipleship. Jesus here, showed us how discipleship is done. This reveals that the kind of evangelism that we have been called to do is not a hit and run kind of evangelism. No! It is discipleship evangelism and it is only possible through the avenue of teaching. We see Jesus modelling this in His earthly ministry with His disciples and the multitudes. Jesus was always teaching. He took His time to establish truth in the hearts of His hearers. He allowed questioning, which aided further clarity in His teaching. The apostles of Jesus did the same. They taught the word to all who believed in the message of Christ.

Teaching is a tradition of the church. The church of Jesus is primarily a place of teaching. Therefore, as christians, we must endeavour to allow ourselves to be taught. This is vital because it is in teaching that formation of disciples takes place. Jesus said to the people He called (who became His disciples) at the beginning of His ministry to follow Him and that He will make them fishers of men (Matt 4:19). The question is, how did He make them fishers of men? It was through teaching. I encourage you to give yourself to the teaching ministry in your local church and you will see God's plan of discipleship emerge in and through you.

Blessed?

Let's Pray
Father, I thank you for your program and plan to disciple me through the teaching ministry in my local church. I yield myself to your plan for my life in the name of the Lord Jesus. Amen

TITLE: UNDERSTANDING THE GREAT COMMISSION (*BAPTIZING IN THE NAME*) - PART 18

Matthew 28:18-20
[18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
[19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
[20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

In our previous study, we learnt that the fullness or totality of the Godhead permanently dwells in Jesus bodily. The name Jesus therefore carries divine omnipotence. His name bears His divine status.

In our study today, we will be looking at how the Father, Son and Holy Spirit respond to the name of Jesus. In John 16:23, Jesus taught that "...whatever you shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you. Here we see that the Father answers prayers in the name of Jesus. We have answered prayers on the authority, character, access, rights and privileges of Jesus whenever we approach the Father.

Jesus, in His teaching said in John 14:14, that "if you shall ask anything in my name, I will do it". Here too, Jesus said that He will do what we ask in His name. Jesus' name is as authoritative as His person. He is in His name. The character of His person is the character of His name. Lastly in John 14:26, Jesus taught that the Holy Spirit is sent in the name of Jesus. It says "But the comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name..." We see here that the Holy Spirit was given in the name of Jesus. We see how significant the name of Jesus is. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit act in that name. So dear reader, if you have not submitted to this name Jesus, I encourage you to do so by making Jesus your Lord and saviour today. And if you are a believer in Jesus, learn to live in the reality of this name. Do all in the name of Jesus and see the Father, Son and Holy Spirit's activities in your life.

Blessed?

Let's Pray
Father, I praise your name, which You have given to me. Thank you for the name of Jesus. I live my life onwards not on account of what I have done but on account of what Jesus has done and made available to me.
Hallelujah

TITLE: UNDERSTANDING THE GREAT COMMISSION (*BAPTIZING IN THE NAME*) - PART 16

Matthew 28:18-20
[18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
[19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
[20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

In our previous study, we learnt that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit have a name. And today's study seeks to answer the question of what that name is.

To help us answer this question, we will be looking at the historical account of the early church in the book of Acts and the name by which the apostles baptised those who believed the gospel. In Acts 2, Peter preached his first sermon on the day of Pentecost. The multitude, being convicted by Peter's message on the gospel of the resurrected Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, asked Peter what they were to do to become a part of this fulfilled prophecy. Peter's response leads us into the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He said to the multitude in verse 38, "...repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ..." Peter preached that they were to be baptized in the name of Jesus.

Also, in Acts 8, Philip went to Samaria and preached Christ to them with signs and wonders. When the people of Samaria believed, they were baptized in the name of Jesus (Acts 8:12,16). Again, when you read Acts 19, Paul had met about twelve disciples who followed the teachings of John the Baptist. When Paul realised that they knew nothing about the Holy Spirit, he preached Christ to them, and verse 5 of Acts 19 says that "when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus". Did you notice that in all these three instances, baptism was in the name of Jesus? Thus, Peter, the other apostles and Paul, all understood that, when Jesus said to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, He meant to baptize in His name; the name of Jesus. Jesus is the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Father responds to that name. The Son acts in the name. The Spirit operates in that name. The name Jesus is the greatest name given to all of humanity, especially those who receive it. You can see why no one can be saved apart from the name Jesus. Whenever you mention or act in the name of Jesus, you have the full backing of the Godhead: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, because the Godhead lives in that name.

Blessed?

Let's Pray
Father, I thank you for the name of Jesus, which you have given to us for salvation, baptism, victory and that grants us unqualified access to you. Thank you that I have all round success in every challenges of life through the authority that you have vested in the name of Jesus. Amen

TITLE: UNDERSTANDING THE GREAT COMMISSION (*BAPTIZING IN THE NAME*) - PART 15

Matthew 28:18-20
[18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
[19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
[20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (NIV)

Yesterday's study introduced us to the subject of baptism. We saw that it means to dip or immerse completely. This led us to look at the matter of water baptism, as a sign or illustration of our salvation and not the source or cause of our salvation.

Today we will be looking at the name by which baptism is done. Let's look at the second part of the 19th verse in our opening texts. Jesus said "...baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,...". This is a very powerful statement from Jesus, and understanding that impacts us greatly. Notice that the word "name" in the above passage is singular and not plural. Jesus did not say in the "names" (plural) of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. No! Rather He said, in the "name" (singular) of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. This means that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit share a common name. Thus, the name of the Father, is the name of the Son, which is also the name of the Holy Spirit. Glory! Did you see that?

Now, the question to ask is, what is the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? The book of Acts, which is a historical account of the early church after the Ascension of Jesus offers us a stunning answer to these questions. Bear in mind that Father is not a name but a title, Son is also not a name but a title. Holy Spirit is also not a name but a description of God's Spirit. So what is the name of the Father, which the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit are also identified with?
We will continue tomorrow.

Hope this blessed you?

Let's Pray
Father, I thank you for the name, that Jesus and the Holy Spirit shares with you. And as my heart opens to this reality, I thank you for the impact it brings to my life.
Amen
