TITLE: UNDERSTANDING THE GREAT COMMISSION (*BAPTIZING IN THE NAME*) - PART 16
Matthew 28:18-20
[18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
[19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
[20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
In our previous study, we learnt that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit have a name. And today's study seeks to answer the question of what that name is.
To help us answer this question, we will be looking at the historical account of the early church in the book of Acts and the name by which the apostles baptised those who believed the gospel. In Acts 2, Peter preached his first sermon on the day of Pentecost. The multitude, being convicted by Peter's message on the gospel of the resurrected Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, asked Peter what they were to do to become a part of this fulfilled prophecy. Peter's response leads us into the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He said to the multitude in verse 38, "...repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ..." Peter preached that they were to be baptized in the name of Jesus.
Also, in Acts 8, Philip went to Samaria and preached Christ to them with signs and wonders. When the people of Samaria believed, they were baptized in the name of Jesus (Acts 8:12,16). Again, when you read Acts 19, Paul had met about twelve disciples who followed the teachings of John the Baptist. When Paul realised that they knew nothing about the Holy Spirit, he preached Christ to them, and verse 5 of Acts 19 says that "when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus". Did you notice that in all these three instances, baptism was in the name of Jesus? Thus, Peter, the other apostles and Paul, all understood that, when Jesus said to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, He meant to baptize in His name; the name of Jesus. Jesus is the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Father responds to that name. The Son acts in the name. The Spirit operates in that name. The name Jesus is the greatest name given to all of humanity, especially those who receive it. You can see why no one can be saved apart from the name Jesus. Whenever you mention or act in the name of Jesus, you have the full backing of the Godhead: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, because the Godhead lives in that name.
Blessed?
Let's Pray
Father, I thank you for the name of Jesus, which you have given to us for salvation, baptism, victory and that grants us unqualified access to you. Thank you that I have all round success in every challenges of life through the authority that you have vested in the name of Jesus. Amen
