WISDOM - Little Foxes

Solomon’s Song of Songs is easily a book that can make the reader blush. But beyond being a love song between a bride and groom, it is also a book full of wisdom. It is the inspired Word of God, and even in the middle of romance, there are warnings worth paying attention to.

I had six chickens. Key word: had. Something got into the hen house and wiped out four in one night. It probably wasn’t a bear or a cougar. It was likely something small enough to squeeze through a weak spot, like a little fox. That is often how relationships are damaged too. It is not always the large, obvious things. Sometimes it is the little foxes.

Scripture
“Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.” (Song of Songs 2:15)

Observation
Little foxes are the small things that sneak in unnoticed but can become destructive. In relationships, little foxes can look like sarcasm, resentment, busyness, silence, comparison, neglect, assumptions, passive-aggressive comments, unresolved conflict, or small compromises.

They may seem minor in the moment, but left unchecked, they can ruin the vineyard.

Application
I need to be better at catching the little foxes. I’m not always good at trapping them early. Sometimes I ignore small frustrations until they become resentment. Sometimes I excuse busyness until it becomes neglect. Sometimes I let my tone sneak through the fence and do damage.

Love requires daily maintenance, honest conversations, quick forgiveness, and small acts of faithfulness. It also requires the humility to notice what is sneaking in before it destroys what God is growing.

Prayer
Lord, give me wisdom to notice the little foxes before they cause real damage. Help me protect my marriage, my family, my friendships, and my church relationships.
Teach me to confront small things with grace before they become big things with pain. Amen.

WISDOM - Classroom of Character

No one can know what tomorrow holds, but if we know Who holds tomorrow, we will be able to outlast the storms and come through with much more wisdom, humility, knowledge, and perseverance. Those character developments are our reward.

Scripture
“Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come. As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them” Ecclesiastes 9:12

Observation
Jesus said it in Matthew 5 that the rain will fall on the just as well as on the unjust. In other words, no one is immune, and when adversity strikes, it does not mean that God dislikes a person or that their value is diminished.

Application
We cannot control what cards are dealt to us, but we surely can determine how we play them! Too often, our goal in prayer is to achieve a stress-free life, absent of problems or suffering. However, that perspective has caused many to misunderstand the ways of God.

Of course, we do our best to avoid unnecessary hurts and mistakes by obeying God’s Word, but that will never guarantee that others will always treat us well or that accidents will never occur. Instead, we get to depend on the Holy Spirit, who will guide us not only to victory but also to emerge with a greater likeness to Christ, who experienced the same

Prayer
Thank You, Lord, for teaching me that my greatest growth often happens in the midst of struggle, not comfort. Help me to trust Your step-by-step guidance through difficult times, knowing that You use these moments to shape my character and faith. Amen

WISDOM- The Best Advice

“Follow your heart.” It sounds wise, but Jeremiah warns it may be some of the worst advice we could follow…

Scripture
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9

Observation
Jeremiah warns that our hearts can deceive us, meaning we can be sincere and still be wrong.
Our hearts can confuse emotion with truth, desire with God’s will, bitterness with discernment, fear with wisdom, compromise with compassion, and selfish ambition with God’s dream.
That’s why the heart is so deceptive: it doesn’t always feel deceptive. If “follow your heart” is poor advice, what is best?
Let God search your heart.
In the next verse, God says, “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind.” He sees beneath our actions, decisions, and words to our true motives.
The world says, “Follow your heart.” God says, “Let me search it.”

Application
The best advice is to keep surrendering my heart to God and ask Him to reveal what I cannot see before I act on what I feel.
Is this faith or impatience? Is this conviction or pride? Am I obeying God, or am I asking Him to approve something I have already decided to do?
It’s natural to bend God’s will toward what I want. I need Him to search, correct, and align my heart with His.
My heart might be deceptive, but I can always trust the God who searches it.

Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal what is not aligned with You. Expose what I cannot see, and shape my heart to reflect Yours. Amen.

Never Too Wise For More WISDOM

When I was seven, my dad woke me early for devotions, saying I had an appointment with the King of kings. With a little McDonald’s motivation, he taught me to hear God’s Word for myself, starting in Proverbs—a book of wisdom I still love today.

Scripture
The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young—let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:1–7

Observation
Proverbs teaches both the simple and the wise how to gain wisdom, understanding, and instruction. Its key truth is this: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” True wisdom starts with reverence, honor, and surrender to God.
Wise people never stop learning. Pride says, “I already know.” Wisdom says, “Lord, teach me more.” We are never too wise to grow in God’s wisdom.

Application
Am I still teachable? Do I approach God’s Word with humility and eagerness, or have I become overly familiar with it? The moment we stop learning is often the moment we stop growing. The wise are not those who know everything—they are those who continue seeking God for more.

Prayer
Lord, give us teachable hearts. Help us never become prideful or closed off to Your wisdom. Give us a hunger for Your Word and a desire to keep growing no matter our age or stage of life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WISDOM - Collecting Wisdom

Children often collect things, thinking it would be valuable one day. Solomon had far more—wealth, wisdom, pleasure, and success—yet he learned that only wisdom that leads us to God - truly lasts…

Scripture
Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.
Ecclesiastes 12:13

Observation
After a lifetime of searching for meaning through knowledge, achievement, pleasure, and success, Solomon concludes that none of these things can ultimately satisfy the human soul. The collected sayings of wisdom are valuable because they point us back to God. While knowledge has value, knowledge alone cannot answer life's deepest questions.
The wisest man on earth arrives at a simple conclusion: Fear God and obey His commands.

Application
We often collect possessions, achievements, knowledge, and recognition, but none of these can replace a relationship with God.
Solomon reminds us that what matters most is fearing God, obeying Him, and collecting wisdom that keeps us close to the Shepherd.

Prayer
Father, help us stop chasing what cannot satisfy. Teach us to fear You, obey You, and treasure the wisdom found in Your Word. Amen.
