St. George's Cathedral

St. George's Cathedral Welcome to the Official page of St. George's Cathedral. Our aim is to provide a communication platform to network and share information. St.

George's Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Anglican diocese of Cape Town, designed by Sir Herbert Baker and built of sandstone from Table Mountain. The Cathedral was the vision of Robert Gray, the first Bishop of Cape Town, who wanted to have a cathedral worthy of the Mother City. Our Cathedral is the oldest Cathedral in Southern Africa, known as a magnificent historic building, as a place of

prayer and dedicated worship, and a space where people of all faiths, Christian, Jew, Muslim and Hindu, can meet in common acceptance of one another. During the struggle against apartheid, it became known as the 'People’s Cathedral’ for its witness against oppressive and unjust laws. The gothic church is a classic cruciform building, with a courtyard garden which includes a Labyrinth. Our administrative offices are housed in cloisters facing the courtyard. All are welcome to visit the Cathedral to learn more about its history, to visit the Crypt and to view its magnificent design and stained glass windows. Guided tours can be arranged . VISION:
This Cathedral exists to give glory to God and to be a sign of God's Kingdom in this city and nation.

Hendricks Chapel Choir from Syracuse University, New York to perform at St George’s Cathedral on Friday 22 May at 16:00.

The choir will be joined by the UWC Creative Arts Choir.

Entrance is Free.

The Hendricks Chapel Choir is an auditioned ensemble representing many of the colleges and majors available at Syracuse University and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. One of many all-student choirs within the Setnor School of Music, The Hendricks Chapel Choir rehearses once weekly on Thursday evenings, and meets for sectional rehearsals for an additional hour per week. The choir performs regularly at 4:00 p.m. on Sundays as part of Hendricks Chapel’s Malmgren Concert Series and other programming, and regularly services major University events including Remembrance Scholars Convocation, the University Service of Commemoration, and the International Thanksgiving Dinner. The choir travels internationally approximately every four years, and has completed tours in China, Prague, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Germany, Poland, Mexico, and most recently the United Kingdom. The choir plans to complete visits to every inhabited continent by its Centennial Jubilee with a trip to Australia and New Zealand in 2030. A proud Syracuse area tradition, and the oldest extant choir on our campus, past and present members of the Hendricks Chapel Choir embody the best parts of Syracuse University: our students’ desire to serve one another, their university, their community, and their world.
