JC Harmon thought his dream of opening a youth center died when he was nearly killed in a horrific car accident. The fact he survived at all was nothing short of a miracle. He had always wanted to help troubled kids. Even with the support of his entire family, would he be able to run a youth center? Would he be able to find ways to reach kids who needed help, but had nowhere to turn? Before the accident, music was a large part of his life. Would he ever be able to play the piano or compose music again?

Life had never been easy for Amy Phoenix and her younger brother Matthew, but he meant the world to her, and she would do whatever was necessary to protect him. When she heard about a new youth center opening in town, would that be the answer she was looking for? Would that be a way to keep Matt safe and off the streets?

JC’s Hope is a story of God’s healing power. It’s a story of seeing ourselves and our potential the way God sees us. Without setting limits on ourselves, we can overcome life’s challenges and make our dreams come true.

“Mr. and Mrs. Wilson,” Taylor greeted, forcing a smile.

Zach’s mother wrapped Taylor in a one-sided hug as they pushed past her into the house. “Taylor, dear, how many times have I told you to call me Janet?”

“What are you doing here?” Taylor asked in confusion. “I didn’t know you were in town.”

Zach’s parents were the polar opposite of Taylor’s down-to-earth parents. They lived back East and lived a pretentious lifestyle of high-society New Yorkers. Who showed up, uninvited, in a relatively small town in the Pacific Northwest wearing a mink stole?

Janet began walking around the living room, with her husband following behind, as Taylor and Shane remained near the front door.

“Where’s little Zachie?” Janet asked, looking around.

“My son’s name is Connor,” Taylor replied, as her fists tightened involuntarily.

Janet waved her hand dismissively. “I always thought you should have named him after his father.”

“His name is Connor,” Taylor reiterated. “And, again, why are you here?”

Mike looked around at the group of exhausted men but focused his attention on Aiden and Matt. “You boys know this is a good thing you’ve been doing here, right? You thought it would be great to be able to build houses someday, and you wanted the first house to be a gift for JC and Amy. This first house is important. But it hasn’t been easy. Take it from me, the first of anything never comes easy. There are always going to be setbacks. There are going to be things that don’t work out the way you had hoped. But you learn from all those ‘firsts’ and keep moving forward."

After listening to her grandkids tell stories, Lenora decided to have some fun. She grabbed a pitcher of water from the table and innocently walked up behind Spence, holding the pitcher behind her back. Just as she raised the pitcher over his head to pour water on him, little Levi ran by chasing Jack.

One look at Lenora and Levi yelled, “Grandma, no, no! No water!”

Everyone started laughing at Levi’s reaction.

Emma was laughing so hard that she fell off her chair onto the ground. “That’s the perfect name for Grandma! Grandma No-No!”

Joe laughed as his non-repentant mother still held the pitcher of water over Spence’s head, grinning widely. “Out of the mouths of babes!”

Aaron was rolling around on the grass, laughing hysterically. “I like it! Aunt Emma, can we call her Grandma No-No?”

Between fits of laughter, Emma said, “You need to ask her if it’s okay.”

Lenora laughed and said, “Sure, why not? I bet I’d be the only Grandma No-No around!” Then she calmly walked over and poured the pitcher of water on her youngest granddaughter. “And that, my dear Emma, is for making the name stick.”

Emma stood up and shook the water out of her long blonde hair. Then she walked over and hugged her grandma. “It was totally worth it, Grandma No-No! Don’t ever change!”

The kids were giving their undivided attention to the two dogs, so Mike joined the adults on the back deck. He pulled up a chair beside Ryleigh, who had her ankle propped up on a table with a pillow. He sat back in the chair, folded his arms across his chest, and let a grin spread across his face.

“So,” he began slowly, pinning Ryleigh with what he hoped was a no-nonsense look. “What’s this I hear about you falling off a perfectly good mountain?”

Ryleigh grinned back at this wonderful family friend. “Well, Mike, you see, it all started with a dog. He had been lost in the mountains, and Sage found him. And, you know Sage. She just can’t pass up a dog in need. She rescued him and insisted we bring him home with us. What could I do? Sage is pretty persuasive.” With that, Ryleigh shrugged her shoulders and grinned even wider.

“So, let’s see,” Mike began as he rubbed his chin, thinking. “What you’re telling me is that you’re blaming this whole adventure on that cute little puppy out there in the yard? You fall off a perfectly good mountain because that little puppy was on a rescue mission? And you’re also telling me that the puppy you rescued just a few months ago is now rescuing dogs on her own?”

Meghan was determined to fulfill the dream of building her own home. Her daughter Kaci deserved that much. She wouldn’t have survived the divorce without the moral support of her daughter. It wasn’t easy raising a teenager alone, even though Kaci was never a problem. The real problem was not enough hours in the day.

Travis Harmon, the new pastor of Hope Community Church, had a secret. Only the head elder was aware of the inner turmoil his friend suffered. Travis had a gift when it came to leading souls to Christ, but he could be forced to give up the ministry. What would it take to heal his tortured heart? Would he ever feel whole again?

Diamond in the Rough is a story of God’s healing power. How he looks past our flaws and weaknesses and sees our potential. He looks beyond the obvious, beyond the experiences that have taken a toll on our optimism. He looks at our character, our soul. And he looks through the loving eyes of a parent. On the surface, we may not look like much. But with some hard work and a little bit of polishing, we can shine like the brightest diamond.
