When My Selfishness Almost Made Me Miss God’s Goodness
This morning, I was driving to the gym when I got stuck behind a school bus. It seemed like it was taking forever, and I began to get frustrated.
Then I noticed a mother walking down a driveway with two little girls and what appeared to be their younger brother. It looked like it might have been his first time getting on the school bus.
And it was so sweet to watch those two little sisters walking their little brother down the driveway. They weren’t rushing him. They weren’t impatient with him. They simply walked alongside him, patiently moving at his pace, in his time, making sure he got to the bus safely.
There was something so innocent and beautiful about it.
And suddenly, I was convicted.
I had become so consumed with my inconvenience, my schedule, and my desire to get where I was going that I had almost missed something beautiful.
Right in front of me was this simple, organic moment of love—a mother and two sisters patiently caring for a little boy.
And I almost missed it because I was thinking about myself.
Lord, forgive me.
How often does my selfishness keep me from seeing Your goodness?
How many beautiful, ordinary moments do I miss because I’m too frustrated that life isn’t happening according to my timetable?
I don’t want to live that way.
I want to slow down enough to see what You’re doing. I want to recognize Your goodness in the ordinary—in the little things, the interruptions, and the moments that don’t go according to my plans.
Because sometimes what feels like an inconvenience is actually an opportunity to see the beauty of God that I would have otherwise missed.
“Love is patient, love is kind.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:4
Lord, forgive my selfishness.
Slow my heart.
Open my eyes.
Help me see people the way You see them.
And when life doesn’t move at my pace, help me remember that Your goodness may be happening right in front of me.
Thank you Jesus!
