St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in White SD has always been a mission--"A Mission with a Mission"! This hardy group of pioneer families traveled to Elkton and Estelline to attend Mass and eventually held Mass in one of the homes when they had a priest who would come f
rom Elkton or Estelline. Finally a church was built by the congregation and was dedicated in October of 1898; but they were still served by priests from other towns. This same building with modifications is still in use today, and we are still served by a priest from another town. Throughout the years, St. Paul's has been a mission of Elkton, Estelline, Clear Lake, Aurora, and Brookings. It is currently served by the priest from Pius XII Newman Center at SDSU in Brookings. Paul's has also been the home parish for 4 sisters who have been teachers--Sister Veronica (Carolyn) Fasbender, Sister Ann Fasbender, Sister Bennett (Alice) Fasbender, and Sister Mary Anthony (Maxine) Dempsey. Other that the priest, there are no paid positions at St. Paul's. One of the first things that a priest who is new to St. Paul's learns is that if something needs to be done, someone will step forward and do it. Some of the names of the early families were Davis, Farrell, Fasbender, Murphy, Willmott, and Smith. These families served as an active part of the parish for many years. Some of their descendants still attend St. Paul's today. As our way of life has changed, the demographics of our community have also changed and these families have been joined by many others who have quickly become an integral part of our parish family. There are currently between 60 and 70 families who call St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in White SD their home parish.
