Eighth Grade Retreat
Each year the Eighth Grade graduating class begins the year by going on retreat. The class walked down to the rectory on Post Avenue. We spread out in the backyard, sun room and dining room. The first activity was Human BINGO. Father Nesly offered a reflection, challenging the young people to build their lives on a strong foundation of solid rock - Jesus! Then they decorated rocks as a reminder. Then they read and reflected on several scripture passages and wrote letters their future selves to open in June. In their letters, they reflected on their current hopes and goals for the year. Our group attended the 12:10 Parish Mass, celebrated by Father John on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and then had pizza and ice cream on Post Avenue. It was a beautiful day with a great group of kids!

Magnificent Humanity!
We have set aside every Friday afternoon during last period for a special activity. We are calling this our Magnificent Humanity Period. (We borrowed the name from Pope Leo.) The theme for September is water. It ties into Pope Leo's September prayer intention, For the Care of Water: "Let us pray for a just and sustainable management of water, a vital resource, so that everyone may have equal access to it."

Magnificent Humanity!
Fifth graders combined our September theme of water with a lesson of remembrance for 9/11. Students designed and built rescue boats out of aluminum foil and tested how much weight their boats could hold before sinking. As we experimented, we talked about how boats and water played an important role in helping to evacuate people from Manhattan on 9/11. A simple STEM challenge became a meaningful lesson about water, teamwork, helping others, and remembering the heroes of 9/11.

Magnificent Humanity!
This post is from our 1st and 2nd graders who got together and made Calm Down Jars. Water cleanses us, body and soul. The glitter in the jar represents our worries, fears or distractions. When we are overwhelmed, all these things are swirling in our minds and make it hard to see clearly. When we slow down and pray, think, or meditate, the glitter (distractions) sink to the bottom and we can see clearly through the water again. This is just like the peace and clarity we receive after praying and asking God for help.

Sunday Inspiration from St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope School!

Today's Gospel Reading is Matthew 18:21-35
Then Peter came up to him and asked, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy times seven.

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant.
“For this reason, the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a man was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. Since he had no possible way to repay what he owed, his master ordered him to be sold, together with his wife, his children, and all his property, to satisfy the debt. At this, the servant fell to his knees, saying, ‘Be patient with me, and I will repay you in full.’ Moved with compassion, the master of that servant let him go and canceled the debt.

“However, when that servant left, he encountered one of his fellow servants who owed him one hundred denarii, and, choking him, he demanded, ‘Pay me back what you owe.’ His fellow servant fell to his knees and pleaded with him, saying, ‘Be patient with me and I will repay you.’ But he turned a deaf ear and had him thrown into prison until he had repaid the debt.

“When his fellow servants observed what had happened, they were greatly upset, and, going to their master, they reported everything that had taken place. Then his master sent for the man and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you for your complete debt because you begged me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow servant as I had mercy on you?’ And in his anger his master handed him over to be tortured until he repaid the entire debt. In the same way, my heavenly Father will also deal with you unless each of you forgives his brother from the heart.”

May your Sunday and the coming week be filled with blessings!

Flag of Honor

The Flag of Honor Is inscribed with the names of those who lost their lives on 9/11 and for the first 10 years afterwards. The flag was gifted to us by Rose Quinn, widow of NCPD Officer Jimmy Quinn, a St. Brigid’s School alumnus and first responder who succumbed to a 9/11 related disease.

The StB/OLH family remembers those lost on September 11, 2001 and will never forget.

9/11 Remembered
The School Community gathered this morning for a Prayer Service on the 25th Anniversary of 9/11. Deacon Frank was the presider. Sixth graders hosted as Readers and Altar Servers. We began in the Chapel by singing "The Peace Prayer of St. Francis." Mr. Clagnaz offered a reflection and mentioned that the light at our Prayer Service is the Light of Christ from the Easter Candle. We ended our prayer outside while singing "Let There be Peace on Earth," and "America, the Beautiful." Deacon Frank reminded us to smile and bring the light of Christ to everyone we see today.
