Matthew Henry wisely wrote:

“Where we cannot speak well, we had better say nothing than speak evil.”

How often we excuse our words simply because they are true. But truth alone does not always give us permission—or a reason—to repeat something about another person.

Before we speak, perhaps we should ask:

Is it true?
Is it necessary?
Is it loving?
Will it help, heal, or build up?

Gossip and backbiting do more than pass along information—they can wound reputations, create suspicion, and separate even close friends.

A godly tongue does not merely avoid saying what is false; it carefully considers whether what is true needs to be said.

May we refuse to carry tales or be willing listeners to them. Instead, may our words be true, gracious, profitable, healing, and peace-making.

Lord, set a watch over our mouths today. Help us to speak words that honor You and build others up. Amen. 🙏

The more our hearts are fixed on God in grateful thanksgiving for His mercies, the more faithfully we will endure the trials He allows to be mingled with them. Gratitude helps us see our afflictions in light of God’s goodness, and His goodness gives us grace to bear them with patience.

Commit your works to the Lord, and cast your cares upon Him. Trust Him completely, place every burden in His hands, and depend upon Him by faith. As we commit our way to Him, He establishes our hearts and gives us peace.
