Prayer is not only asking God for things. Prayer is our relationship with God, and that relationship takes different forms.

This is when we recognize God's greatness, goodness, holiness, and majesty. We bless God because He is God, not simply because of what He gives us.
Example:
โBlessed are You, Lord, God of all creation. You are holy, eternal, almighty, and worthy of all praise.โ
It is the prayer of a heart that says:
โLord, I recognize who You are.โ

Petition is when we personally ask God for something we need.
We can ask for:
Forgiveness
Wisdom
Strength
Healing
Protection
Employment
Peace
Guidance
Perseverance in faith
Jesus Himself taught us to ask:
โGive us this day our daily bread.โ
โ Matthew 6:11
For example:
โLord, I am struggling with this situation. Please give me wisdom and strength to overcome it.โ
Petition is not telling God what He must do. It is placing our needs into His hands and trusting His wisdom.

Intercession is similar to petition, but instead of praying primarily for ourselves, we pray on behalf of others.
We pray for:
Our families
The sick
The poor
Priests and religious
Those who have lost their faith
Souls in Purgatory
Our enemies
The Church
Those suffering persecution
The whole world
For example:
โLord, bless my mother and keep her in good health. Give her strength and peace.โ
Or:
โLord, bring those who have abandoned the Catholic faith back to the fullness of Your Church.โ
Intercession teaches us that Christian prayer should never be completely self-centered.

Thanksgiving is when we thank God for His blessings and gifts.
We thank Him not only for the things we consider good, but ultimately because He remains good and faithful.
โGive thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.โ
โ 1 Thessalonians 5:18
You can pray:
โThank You, Lord, for the gift of life, for my family, for my faith, for the people You have placed in my life, and even for the difficulties through which You are teaching me.โ
A grateful Christian does not wait until everything is perfect before saying, โThank You, Lord.โ

Praise is when we glorify God because of who He is and what He has done.
We praise Him for His holiness, mercy, love, faithfulness, wisdom, power, and greatness.
โPraise the Lord, for the Lord is good.โ
โ Psalm 135:3
You can simply pray:
โLord, You are great. You are holy. You are faithful. You are merciful. There is none like You. May Your name be glorified forever.โ
Praise takes our eyes away from ourselves and places them on God.

A mature prayer life should not consist only of:
โLord, give me this.โ
Sometimes we should simply say:
โLord, I adore You.โ
Sometimes:
โLord, thank You.โ
Sometimes:
โLord, I praise You.โ
Sometimes:
โLord, help me.โ
And sometimes:
โLord, bless and help someone else.โ
A beautiful prayer life contains all of these.
