Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord begins with the Commemoration of the Lord’s Entrance into Jerusalem—featuring the blessing of palms, a Gospel reading (Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11a, or Luke 19:29-40), and a procession.
The Holy Mass then focuses on the Passion Narrative, including Isaiah 50, Philippians 2, and a Gospel reading of the Passion.
1. The Commemoration of the Lord's Entrance
• Gathering: Usually held outside the church or in a smaller area.
• Antiphon/Hymn: "Hosanna to the Son of David" or "All glory, laud and honour".
• Greeting & Address: Priest greets the people and briefly explains the celebration.
• Blessing of Branches: Prayer of blessing over the palm/olive branches.
• Gospel of Entrance: Matthew 21:1-11 (Year A), Mark 11:1-11 (Year 😎, or Luke 19:29-40 (Year C).
• Procession: Faithful enter the church, usually singing, symbolizing following Christ.
2. The Mass
• Collect (Opening Prayer): Focusing on the Passion and Resurrection.
• Liturgy of the Word:
◦ First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 (The suffering servant).
◦ Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 22 ("My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?").
◦ Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 (Christ humbled himself).
◦ The Passion Gospel: The reading of the Lord's Passion according to Matthew, Mark, or Luke.
