St Tikhon's Orthodox Monastery St. Tikhon's is the oldest Orthodox monastery in America, established in 1905. Please be respectful with your comments: No church or state politics allowed.

Tikhon's was founded by St Tikhon of Moscow in 1905 in South Canaan, PA, at the urging of the future Archbishop Winnipeg, then Hieromonk Arseny (Chagovtsev). It's mission was to serve as a 'motherhouse' for American monastics and priests serving in the new nation and 'where they could return periodically for spiritual renewal.' It was consecrated by Bishop, later 'Saint' Raphel Hawaweeny who app

ropriately was the first Orthodox bishop consecrated in America itself. Tikhon's close association with the history of American Orthodoxy has remained throughout the years and today, a museum containing the most comprehensive collection of religious articles of all kinds from saints and missionaries associated with America is located on the monastery grounds. While the education of those entering religious service is now carried out by adjacent St. Tikhon's Seminary, the monks continue to work as monks always have making icons, candles, honey, prosphora and other traditional labor along with modern outreach through STM Press. However, the primary 'work' of the monks is prayer and the Liturgy which comprises the essence of spiritual struggle in the Orthodox tradition. Visitors are welcome to visit the monastery and the grounds anytime throughout the year as well as at the annual Memorial Day Pilgrimage. Please seen the monastery website for more information.

"Rejoice, O mountains of Pennsylvania; leap for joy, O waters of the Great Lakes; rise up, O fertile plains of Canada; for the elect of Christ who dwelt in you are glorified, they courageously fought the good fight. They labored in mines and mills, they tilled the land, they braved the challenges of the great cities, enduring many hardships and sufferings. Never failing to worship God in spirit and truth and unyielding in devotion to His most pure Mother, they erected many temples to His glory. Come, O assembly of the Orthodox, and with love let us praise the holy women, men and children, those known to us and those known only to God, and let us cry out to them: “Rejoice, All Saints of North America and pray to God for us!”
