"He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself." — 1 Corinthians 14:4
The word "edify" does not simply mean “to cause to feel encouraged.” It is an architectural term that means “to expand, enlarge, or increase capacity.”

Imagine knocking out walls and making a building larger. That is what happens when you pray in tongues: You are increasing your spiritual capacity to receive more from God — more wisdom, more revelation, more understanding, more strength!

My friend, every time you pray in the Spirit, God is enlarging your capacity for what He wants to do in your life.

Eventually, when you pray only in your natural language, you run out of words.
My wife Denise tells how she was once lying on her bed trying to tell Jesus how much she loved Him. Finally she said, "Lord, You're just stupendous!" Then she thought, "That's it. I've run out of words."
She needed a heavenly language.

When she received the baptism in the Holy Spirit, her spiritual tongue was loosed, and she entered a realm of prayer she had never known before.

My friend, praying in tongues exceeds human vocabulary. It is your spirit speaking to God in the purest language possible.

Speaking in tongues is not gibberish — it is your human spirit speaking to God.
When you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, it is as though the power of God cuts the rope on your spiritual tongue, and suddenly your spirit begins to speak.
Spiritual words begin to flow up and through your mouth.

We call it tongues, we call it a prayer language, but my friend, it is much more than sounds. Speaking in tongues is your spirit communicating directly with God.
