Walk In Solidarity June 20 World Refugee Day
Did you know that the average speed a human walks is three miles an hour? This means that Jesus also walked at this pace during his time on earth. If Jesus walked slowly at three miles per hour, then it is the speed at which God walks with us in love.
God walks “slowly” because he is love. If he is not love he would have gone much faster. Love has its speed… It is the speed we walk and therefore it is the speed the love of God walks.
— Kosuke Koyama
If this is how God moves, then this is how we choose to move, walking in step with those who are displaced, detained, and deported. During Refugee Awareness Month, we’re focusing our attention, prayers, and advocacy on refugees and others who seek safety outside of their home countries. In a time when policies increasingly harm these communities within our own borders, we stand with - and walk for - those who are displaced, detained, and deported.

What can you do? Walk 1 mile, 3 miles or gather at church to pray and contemplate the journey of those who seek a permanent place to call home and be safe. Gather at 8:30 at church on June 20. Watch this site for more information over the next 2 weeks.

Please plan to join us this Sunday, May 3 to hear Vanessa Giraldez, NAMI Program Coordinator present NAMI 101 between services. She will give us an overview of mental health information and help us identify what is typical behavior and what is something that needs help. This information is especially helpful to parents and others raising middle and high school age teens but will be informative to all ages. She will share the many programs of NAMI and other resources and how we can all be better able to help those who are struggling regardless of age. May is mental health month and a good time to work with NAMI, one of our Community Partners.

Don't forget to join us between services tomorrow to hear about SOPHIA, our March featured Community Partner. Pastor Jim Bickel will talk about Ascension's history with SOPHIA, SOPHIA's current ministries and how we can serve today.
