Spurgeon quotes the hymn “The Prodigal Son”, written by John Newton. The hymn ends:

“Tis thus the Lord His love reveals,
To call poor sinners home;
More than a father’s love He feels,
And welcomes all that come.”

We were all prodigal but for the merciful call of our Savior Jesus. What a beautiful reminder of God’s unfailing lovingkindness and faithfulness.

In Romans 12:11 we read “Don’t be slothful in zeal, but be fervent in spirit” – at least that’s how the ESV translates it. I prefer a slightly different, and I think clearer translation, “Don’t serve the Lord with slow diligence but with a intense courage.”

Here’s why this is a better translation and more helpful to us….

John 13:12-15 tells us…
“When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
