Perryville Bible Church "Making More and Better Disciples of Jesus."

I believe we've experienced a taste of this as a church over the last few days. God bless you, dear saints!

"And then one day, I'll cross that river;
I'll fight life's final war with pain.
And then as death gives way to vict'ry,
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He reigns.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, all fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living just because He lives!

We've been wrestling with God's "severe mercy" as a church this week. But in God's kind providence, we come this Sunday to the final part of "God's Story" - the "blessed hope" that belongs to every child of God. It is this very hope that keeps us looking forward through the chaos, pain, and tears that are part of our journey through this fallen world, as God leads us on the way to Zion, our eternal home.

Our Scripture Sunday will include these words of promise: "He will wipe away every tear from [our] eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Rev. 21:4)

As we close Sunday's service, we plan to introduce this song. May the Spirit enable us to sing and express this hope, even through tear-soaked eyes.

We Will Feast in the House of Zion

Chorus:
We will feast in the house of Zion;
We will sing with our hearts restored.
"He has done great things," we will say together.
We will feast and weep no more.

Verse 1
We will not be burned by the fire -
He is the Lord, our God.
We are not consumed by the flood -
Upheld, protected, gathered up.

Verse 2
In the dark of night, before the dawn,
My soul, be not afraid.
For the promised morning, O how long?
O God of Jacob, be my strength.

Verse 3
Every vow we've broken and betrayed,
You are the faithful one.
And from the garden to the grave,
Bind us together, bring shalom.

It is with a pit that still remains in my stomach that I write, calling all of our church family and friends to call upon our God together, even as we grieve and question His purposes. The phrase that continues to linger in my mind today speaks of God's "severe mercy." God's mercies are not always experienced as glad or comforting, but sometimes as a harsh and severe ("frowning," below) providence.

William Cowper knew much sorrow and suffering in his life. He penned the poem/hymn, "God Moves in a Mysterious Way" in 1774. Two stanzas may be helpful for us in these profoundly bitter days...

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning Providence
He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour.
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

Hear my prayer, O LORD;
give ear to my pleas for mercy!
In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!
Enter not into judgment with your servant,
for no one living is righteous before you.
For the enemy has pursued my soul;
he has crushed my life to the ground;
he has made me sit in darkness like those long dead.
Therefore my spirit faints within me;
my heart within me is appalled.
I remember the days of old;
I meditate on all that you have done;
I ponder the work of your hands.
I stretch out my hands to you;
my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah
Answer me quickly, O LORD!
My spirit fails!
Hide not your face from me,
lest I be like those who go down to the pit.
Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love,
for in you I trust.
Make me know the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul.
Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD!
I have fled to you for refuge.
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God!
Let your good Spirit lead me
on level ground!
For your name’s sake, O LORD, preserve my life!
In your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble!
And in your steadfast love you will cut off my enemies,
and you will destroy all the adversaries of my soul,
for I am your servant.
— Psalm 143:1-12

Whate're My God Ordains Is Right
Samuel Rodigast (1675)

Whate’er my God ordains is right,
His holy will abideth;
I will be still whate’er He does,
And follow where He guideth.
He is my God,
Though dark my road,
He holds me that I shall not fall,
Wherefore to Him I leave it all.

Whate’er my God ordains is right,
He never will deceive me;
He leads me by the proper path,
I know He will not leave me,
And take content
What He hath sent;
His hand can turn my griefs away,
And patiently I wait His day.

Whate’er my God ordains is right,
His loving thought attends me;
No poison’d draught the cup can be
That my Physician sends me,
But medicine due
For God is true,
And on that changeless truth I build,
And all my heart with hope is fill’d.

Whate’er my God ordains is right,
Though now this cup in drinking
May bitter seem to my faint heart,
I take it all unshrinking;
Tears pass away
With dawn of day,
Sweet comfort yet shall fill my heart,
And pain and sorrow shall depart.

Whate’er my God ordains is right,
Here shall my stand be taken;
Though sorrow, need, or death be mine,
Yet am I not forsaken,
My Father’s care
Is round me there,
He holds me that I shall not fall,
And so to Him I leave it all.

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
..In his temple all cry, “Glory!”
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!
