Missing the Mark
In Charles Martin’s book The Water Keeper a young girl is examining a collection of bows and arrows from throughout history. She turns to the owner of the collection and asks if he is Robin Hood. He replies, “No, I’m a sinner.” Puzzled, she asks what that has to do with collecting old bows and arrows. He explains that the term “sinner” comes from a 13th century, Old English archery term meaning “to miss the mark.” Honestly, I have not fact checked this. It’s such a beautiful analogy that I’m going to take Charles Martin’s word for it.
Have you ever “missed the mark?” I know I have. Guess what? I know you have too, because you’re human. Even after we initially repent and turn our lives to Jesus, we still “miss the mark” sometimes.
Before we first repent and begin our walk with Jesus, we’re not just missing the mark, we’re missing the whole target. However, when we let Jesus step in, those arrows start to fly straighter. Don’t be discouraged when you “miss the mark.” Give it to Jesus through repentance, and watch as your arrows shoot closer and closer to the bullseye.
