Monthly Ramblings: September

Whose Are You?
I recently read a series of books by Charles Martin that centered around twin brothers. Abandoned, basically at birth, with their mother not even naming them. One twin grew to be the hero of the story, while the other became the villain. In one part of the story, the hero’s apprentice asked him how the two brothers took such separate roads in life? He replied, “Identity precedes purpose. You can’t know who you are until you know whose you are. Belongingness matters.” You see, the hero found that flesh and blood isn’t the only thing that brings meaning. It certainly isn’t the main thing either. He found his belonging with the Only One that can bring real belonging.
Too many times we get hung up on the question of “Who am I?” When asking that question we’re starting in the wrong place. First, ask the question, “ Whose am I?” Am I a next generation of whatever my last name is? Am I one taking the baggage from one generation and giving it to the next generation? I belong to myself, focusing only on my wants and needs? Do I belong to the One and Only Chainbreaker?
In order to find our way in this world and to know who we are in this life, we have to look deep within ourselves. Then, ask ourselves a question. “Do I belong to myself or do I belong to Jesus?” Once we fully belong to Him, all the other questions will sort themselves out.

Monhtly Ramblings: August

Set the Table…
In season five of "The Chosen", Jesus and the disciples are seen getting ready for the Last Supper. Although, the disciples don’t quite realize that’s what this is, they think it’s just their traditional Passover meal. In one scene, Peter and John are seen putting the finishing touches to the table. John begins to say that he doesn’t understand why Jesus arranged it or why they were there in that moment. Peter replies, “But we set the table anyway.”
Do you ever get caught up in wondering “why?” Jesus may tell us to do something, or we see Him move, and we don’t continue to “set the table.” We stop and have to figure out “Why He moved like that” or “Why does He want me to do this?” If you’re like me, you like to know when things will happen, where they will happen, and why they will happen.
It may not be exactly accurate that Peter and John had those questions in that particular moment, but let’s imagine that they did. They didn’t stop in the task they were given to figure out what really didn’t matter. They were told to set the table anyway. So, I have a challenge for all of us. Including me, because, boy oh boy, do I like to ask questions. Don’t get caught up in the whys. When we don’t understand why Jesus is moving like He is or why He’s wanting us to do something, just go with it. Set the table anyway.

Monthly Ramblings: July

Keep Chugging…
At the Fellowship Meeting in June, Sis. Crowe preached the house down! She spoke of God leveling a mountain into a plain so that we could walk across it. When thinking about that message, my mind began to wonder back to when the railroad was being built. What would they do when reaching a mountain?
I knew of one way that most movies showed, and that’s with explosives. They would basically blast their way through the mountain, creating a tunnel that future trains could safely travel through. In some places, they would build trestles. The train might have to climb one mountain, but then it basically chugged right along to the next mountain. In some areas, the train would have to do switchbacks where it would zig-zag its way up the mountain. The train would climb a level, reverse into a side, then climb to the next level. There were also times, instead of blasting their way through the mountain, they would carve a channel through it, then use the rock in another area to build up a valley for a more level ground to lay the tracks. No matter which route they decided to take, the result was the same. A mountain did not stop the railroad from reaching east to west.
So, what about us? Well, not all mountains will be leveled for us. Some, God will hand us a stick of dynamite so we can blast our way through it. He may guide us through switchbacks and we zig-zag through it. Either way, God is with us and always will be. There is no mountain that can stop us, unless we let it. So, let’s keep chugging over those mountains.
