Cogan House Community Church Join us Sundays for worship at 10:30am! Statement of Faith

The following comprise the scriptural beliefs of this church and its members. He is God.

From a theological point of view, we unite together as God’s redeemed people through the work of Christ on Calvary. The theology we embrace articulates the essence of our faith and is most clearly expressed as follows:

We believe that the Bible, both Old and New Testaments has dual authorship, though written by men in their own language yet the process was supernaturally inspired by God so that i

ts words are the written true revelation of God; it is therefore inerrant. Both the words and its message are without error or mistake. It is to be understood by all through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, its meaning determined by the historical, grammatical, and literary use of the author’s language, comparing scripture with scripture. We believe in one God, infinite Spirit, creator and sustainer of all things, who exists eternally in three persons, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. These three are one in essence but distinct in person and function. We believe that the Father is the first person of the Trinity and the source of all that God is and does. From Him the Son is eternally generated and from them the Spirit eternally proceeds. He is the designer of creation, the speaker of revelation, the author of redemption and the sovereign of history. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity, eternally begotten from the Father. The Virgin Mary through a miracle of the Holy Spirit conceived him. He lives forever as perfect God and perfect man: two distinct natures inseparably united in one person. We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, proceeding from the Father and the Son and equal deity. He is the giver of all life, active in creating and the ordering of the universe; He is the agent of inspiration and the new birth; He restrains sin and Satan; and He indwells and sanctifies all believers. We believe that God created all things. Angels were created as ministering agents, though some, under the leadership of Satan, fell from their sinless state to become agents of evil. The universe was created in six (6) days and is continuously sustained by God; thus in both reflects His glory and reveals His truth. Human beings were directly created in the very image of God, not evolved. As reasoning moral agents possessing free will, they are responsible under God for understanding and governing themselves and the world. We believe that Adam, the first man, willfully disobeyed God, bringing sin and death into the world. As a result, all persons are sinners from conception, which is evidence in their willful acts of sin; and they are therefore subject to eternal punishment, under the just condemnation of the Holy God. We believe that Jesus Christ offered himself as a sacrifice by the appointment of the Father. He fulfilled the demands of God by His obedient life, died on the cross in full substitution and payment for the sins of all, was buried, and on the third day He arose physically and bodily from the dead. He ascended into heaven where He now intercedes for all believers. We believe that each person can be saved through the work of Jesus Christ, through the repentance and remission of sin, and by faith alone in Him as the Savior. The believer is declared righteous, born again by the Holy Spirit, turned from sin, guaranteed by the mark of the Holy Spirit to go to heaven. We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells in all who are born again. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the mark of a new creature in Christ. Every believer is responsible to live in obedience to the Word of God in separation from sin; the ministry of the Holy Spirit makes it possible for the believer to be the righteousness of God in Christ. We believe that this church is a local assembly of baptized believers under the discipline of the Word of God and the Lordship of Christ, organized to carry out the commission to evangelize locally and globally, to teach and to administer the ordinances of believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Table. The Biblical officers are Pastors, Elders and Diaconates and it is a self-governing body. It functions through the ministry of gifts given by the Holy Spirit to each believer, being members of one body and Christ being the head. We believe that all believers, by the spirit, are baptized into one body, “the church.” Emphasizing the unity of all believers through Jesus Christ no matter what walk of life they come from. This spiritual union happens at the point of salvation. We believe that the return of Christ for His church is imminent. It will be followed by seven (7) years of great tribulation. Christ will come to establish His earthly kingdom for a thousand years. The unsaved will then be raised and judged according to their works and separated forever from God, sentenced to hell. The saved, having been raised, will live forever in heaven in fellowship with God. Authority of Statement of Faith

The Statement of Faith does not exhaust the extent of our faith. The Bible itself is the sole and final source of all that we believe. We do believe, however, that the forgoing Statement of Faith accurately represents the teachings of the Bible, and therefore, is binding upon all members. All literature and teaching used in the church shall be in complete agreement with the Statement of Faith.

Rebuke Compromise

Tit 2:11-15 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.

Have you found yourself stuck again? Many Christians have; even when they know what stops them in their tracks, they are unable to move past the sin that trips them up. Some are blind to the root cause but view themselves as running in place. It can be very depressing to feel like you are going nowhere fast.

Israel, God’s chosen nation, has a history of falling into temptation and defeat instead of obeying God’s commands. God calls His children to live obedient lives, but we continually fall into defeat by compromise. We are so engaged in self-centered needs and influenced by the world and deception that whatever truth we have suffocates. We will reinterpret God's commands to fit the outcome we desire. The world pulls us to think its way, Satan strives to lure us into disobedience, and God gets put into a box until we get into trouble.

The Lord has provided the Holy Spirit to help us rid ourselves of ungodliness (Titus 2:11-12), but compromise diminishes the effect of God’s power. We must not give in! In order to defeat compromise, it must begin with our thinking.

Do you agree with God that your attitude or action is displeasing to God? Have you set your mind on obedience, despite the cost? Do you truly believe no longer a slave to anything other than God? My actions will identify what I believe about myself!

Only foolish people think they can compromise and still live a victorious Christ-centered life.

The Bread of Heaven

Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
John 6:31-35

These Jews were probably expecting Jesus to rain down manna on them the way God did before in the wilderness.

The word "manna" means literally "what is it?" The children of Israel said, "It is manna: for they wist (or knew) not what it was." (Ex. 16:15) Manna was a nutritious food that appeared on the ground every morning shortly after the children of Israel left Egypt and began their 40-year wandering in the wilderness. Moses called it "bread which the Lord hath given you to eat."

The Lord, in speaking to Moses, called it "bread from heaven." It was small and round, and was white in color or yellowish. The people, after gathering it, ground it in mills or beat it in a mortar, baked it in pans. and made cakes of it. It tasted like wafers made with honey or fresh oil. It was gathered every morning and had to be used up that day, or it would stink and have worms. An exception was on the sixth day. It could be gathered for the Sabbath and wouldn't spoil (Ex. 16:22-26).

Although they were looking for pieces of bread to materialize, which would have been a great miracle, it would have been insignificant compared to the miracle of God being manifested in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:16). They were talking to the greatest miracle that God had ever performed, but they were blind to it. Many times, we get so intent on seeking God in one area that we forget the greatest miracle of all, which is the love and redemption given to us from God through His Son.

The Mask of A Christian Acts 5:1-11

At that moment, she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events. (Acts 5:10-11)
This is a picture of what happens in a life when pretense is indulged in. The moment you or I pretend to be something that we really are not, the second I assume before you a stance of spiritual impeccability which I do not possess, that moment death enters in. I become a dead and unresponsive cell in that body. Death by unconscious pretense, sham, and hypocrisy.

When we come to church, we put on a mask of adequacy, but inside, we are inadequate, and we know it. We are struggling with problems in our homes, but we don't want to tell anyone about them. Pride doesn't want anyone else to know what is going on between husbands and wives, and between parents and children. The minute we say everything’s great and it is not, we die. Death sets in. Soon that, death pervades the whole church. That is why dishonesty is the primary characteristic of the church today.

How do we deal with this problem within ourselves? In Scripture, the way to cure a spiritual disease is always the same: Repent and believe. Repent means to acknowledge that you have been doing it wrong. It means to face the fact that it has not been right. Then belief means to understand that God has already given you, in Jesus Christ, all that it takes to do what you should. Then start doing it!
