West Side Community Church

West Side Community Church www.tcwscc.com In less than three weeks we outgrew their home with more than forty people attending the first few services. We moved again!

In the fall of 2002, West Side Community Church began with the simple vision of caring about real people with real problems by giving real answers. Pastor John Clark and his wife Michele opened their home and said, “If in the first year, thirty-five people were all that showed up - we would be thrilled”. So we moved to a one room school house. Within the next four weeks, more than 100 people were

attending West Side on Sunday mornings. This time we rented the county park’s facility, Twin Lakes Lodge. By the time Easter Sunday arrived, we had outgrown the lodge with more than 200 people each weekend - and we were just six months old! We moved again, and began renting the auditorium at Traverse City West Senior High School. The facility was perfect for our ministries…and we had room to grow. During this same period of time, God called us to purchase 20 acres of property, start new ministries, and expand our outreach services. With all of the growth we had experienced, we now needed to rent three different facilities each week just to meet the needs of our church family. As we continued to move, so did God! West Side experienced the challenge of outgrowing the high school. With more than one thousand people calling West Side their home church and weekend service attendances nearing 600 people, we were in need of something larger! Since moving into our new building in the fall of 2008, weekend attendances have increased to over 1,200 - with more than 3,000 people calling West Side "Home." In 2008, West Side Community Church constructed a 20,000 square foot Ministry Center located on M-72 West, near Solon Road. It allowed us to expand our ministry potential to the community and meet the needs of those who call West Side home. The new building features a multi-purpose room that serves as the worship center and fellowship area. Large classrooms and a spacious meeting room cater to the needs of our Christian Education and student ministries. Additionally, a comfortable and safe nursery and toddler space with a private nursing mother’s room and restroom serve our young families. For us at West Side, the sole purpose of building this church has always been about people. Our hearts are for people first. Our prayer is that this facility will be a lighthouse to those in need of a safe harbor during the storms of their lives--a place that is loving, accepting and nurturing to the community and world around us. We are committed to completing the mission, passion and vision of Christ!

MISSIONS TRIP UPDATE

Thank you all so much for your prayers and support. God is already working in sweet and powerful ways. The Peru Team has been in Ayacucho for two and a half days, and every hour has been filled with opportunities to love, encourage, evangelize, and disciple. Here are four highlights and two prayer requests.

Saturday afternoon: Heidi led a crochet class for local women and their daughters. The church had asked us to teach a craft the women could use to sell goods and earn extra income. It was a joy to get to know one another, and it set the tone for relationship building.

Sunday morning: It was full of worship and teaching. At 8am, Pastor AJ taught a parenting workshop—the pastors had shared a need for biblical wisdom on s*x and boundaries. We then traveled across town for a 10am worship service, where Pastor AJ taught on the importance of God in the home. The whole team got to love on the church, and one of the most beautiful moments was singing the same song together in English and Spanish.

Sunday evening. We bought groceries for four impoverished families and visited their homes. It was heartbreaking to see how little some had—dirt floors, tarp walls, large families in tight spaces. Many of these visits were to children from the church’s Saturday Kids Club. Alonso, a 12-year-old boy, has been shining the light of Christ to his family, who all recognize how he’s changed since attending the church. Naomi Deik shared, “My perspective has changed so much since I’ve been here. Building relationships and having people open up their homes has truly opened my eyes to be thankful for what I have.”

This afternoon. We presented an evangelistic skit in a park (with more to come this week). Pastor Rick then shared the gospel, opening the door to several fruitful conversations that lasted about 45 minutes—far longer and deeper than we expected.

🙏🏻 Two prayer requests: First, pray for our team’s health. Early mornings, late nights, and long hours in the hot sun in a less-than-sanitary city leave us susceptible to sickness—pray the Lord keeps us healthy. Second, pray for continued fruit. We’re seeing it already. We plant (evangelism) and we water (discipleship), but it is God who brings the fruit (salvation).

Child Dedication is a moment in time when parents publicly commit to parenting with the future faith of their child in mind. We are honored to host families and blessed to partner with them! Child Dedication is not an Infant Baptism. We believe that a child must be old enough to understand what it means to put their faith in Jesus Christ before they can be baptized. Dedication is an opportunity for parents to publicly declare that they want to raise their child to develop their own relationship with Jesus Christ. Join us in witnessing & celebrating these dedications Sunday, May 17 during both the 9am and 11am services. If you attend West Side and would like to dedicate your child that Sunday, please sign up by Sunday, May 10 HERE - www.tcwscc.com/events.

There are several reasons both biblically and practically, to become a member of your local church. If you haven't yet, we hope you will consider West Side for your church home and church family. Our next membership class will be Sunday, May 17, after second service, for two hours in our Fireside Room. Lunch provided.

We’ll cover what the “good news” of Jesus Christ is, what is unique about West Side, and what we are called to as members of a local church. Please let us know you plan to come by signing up here - www.tcwscc.com/events. Questions? Contact [email protected].

West Side Family,

As we all can see, the weather has been severe over the last couple of days. The heavy rain combined with melting snow has caused water levels to rise, and with more rain in the forecast, conditions may worsen.

We have already heard from several families who have been displaced. I’m sure there are others facing the same hardship—some who may not be able to afford a hotel room, meals, or the unexpected costs that come with significant water damage and the difficult process of working through insurance claims.

So what should we do? First, let us not rush past the power and necessity of prayer. God cares for us, comforts us, and is in control of the things that are outside of our control. He gives peace in chaotic moments. Please pray for the families and individuals in need throughout our community.

But we do not want to stop at prayer alone. This is an opportunity for the church to meet a real and tangible need in the lives of our neighbors.

If you, or someone you know, are unable to remain in your home because of flooding, please call the church office or email us at [email protected]. We are prepared to open our Student Ministry Center to provide immediate shelter for families in need. We are also able to provide a meal for those who need to stay here.

Church, this is one of those moments when we get to be the hands and feet of Christ in a visible way. Let’s pray, respond, and care well for our community.
