Cornerstone Church of Christ invites all who are in the Thomasville area to join us for our annual Tenebrae Service on Good Friday (March 29) at 7:30PM.

What is a Tenebrae service? The word "Tenebrae" comes from the Latin meaning "darkness." The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian Good Friday service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of that week from the triumphant Palm Sunday entry through Jesus' burial.

This increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus' death and of hopelessness in the world without God. The service concludes in darkness, sometimes with a final candle, the Christ candle, carried out of the sanctuary, symbolizing the death of Jesus. A loud noise may also sound symbolizing the closing of Jesus' tomb. The worshipers then leave in silence to ponder the impact of Christ's death and await the coming Resurrection (umc.org).

You are cordially invited to attend our Tenebrae Service on April 7th, at 7:30 PM. The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been practiced by the church since medieval times.

Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. Willingly embrace the periods of silence.

As lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ’s suffering and death; we remember the cataclysmic nature of his sacrifice as we hear the overwhelming sound of the “strepitus” (a loud noise signifying the sealing of the tomb).

The name of each shadow will appear on the screen followed by the appropriate scripture reference. Music and silence will be the response to the shadows.

It is a powerful and often times emotional service designed to place us in the mind frame of those first followers of Jesus.
