In his excellent little book, LORD, TEACH ME TO PRAY: AN INVITATION TO INTIMATE PRAYER, John MacArthur opens with the following illustration. "I recently looked into the face of my newest grandchild and watched his blue eyes following my lips as I spoke to him. At seven weeks, he could only respond with a soft coo. In a few months, he'll begin to form words, and our relationship will blossom. He'll find me an eager provider of anything he needs.
All parents (and grandparents) eagerly await a baby's first words and joyfully nurture the development of vocabulary and speech, because communication is a precious and essential part of every loving relationship. Children soon learn the joy of speaking and how critical it is to having their needs and desires met. It is the same with the children of God, who desire to speak to the Father to express love and dependence. And the Father cherishes such prayers. As Proverbs 15:8 says, 'the prayer of the upright is His delight.'
The essence of prayer is talking to God as you would to a beloved parent. It is intimate and loving communication. The Bible encourages us that as children of the heavenly Father we can address Him as 'Abba, Father.' That biblical expression is a tender term of endearment, the equivalent of calling the Eternal God 'Papa,' or 'Daddy.'
Such an idea of intimacy with God was foreign to most Jewish people in Jesus' day. They had been taught by all the leading rabbis that God was far off, behind a veil in the holiest place, and thus unapproachable. When God appeared on Mount Sinai, the Israelites witnessed His presence accompanied by a frightening display of thunder, smoke, and lightning, because 'God is a consuming fire' (Heb 12:29), not an intimate 'Papa.'
How can anyone have intimate access to the holy God of the universe? Yet that is precisely what we have when we go to God in prayer. And not just access, but unlimited divine resources--more than enough for our needs--freely available from a loving heavenly Father. He longs to have us with Him, telling Him all the issues of our hearts, casting all our cares on Him because He cares for us.
This coming Lord's Day we will finish our look at the model prayer that Jesus gives us to follow. It will part 2 of the exposition "How to Talk to Your Heavenly Father" (Matt 6:11-15).

"How to Talk to Your Heavenly Father",pt 1-Matthew 6:9-10

It was 1882 on the campus of Cambridge University that the world was first given the slogan: "Remember the morning watch." Students like Hooper and Thornton found their days loaded with studies, lectures, games, and bull sessions. Enthusiasm and activity were the order of the day. These dedicated men son discovered a flaw in their spiritual armor--a small crack which if not soon closed, would bring disaster.
They sought an answer and came up with a scheme they called the morning watch--a plan to spend the first minutes of a new day alone with God, praying and reading the Bible.
The morning watch sealed the crack. It enshrined a truth so often obscured by the pressure of ceaseless activity that it needs daily rediscovery: To know God, it is necessary to spend consistent time with Him.
The idea caught fire. "A remarkable period of religious blessing" followed, said some, and culminated in the departure of the Cambridge Seven, a band of prominent athletes and men of wealth and education, for missionary service. They gave up everything to go out to China for Christ.
But these men found that getting out of bed for the morning watch was as difficult as it was vital. Thornton was determined to turn indolence into discipline. He invented an automatic, foolproof cure for laziness. It was a contraption set up by his bed: the vibration of an alarm clock set fishing tackle in motion, and the sheets, clipped to the line, moved swiftly into the air off the sleeper's body. Thornton wanted to get up to meet his God!

"To Please God or Man--That is the Question"-Matthew 6:1-7

A number of years ago a university was accused of plagiarism. What made it so unusual was that the school had plagiarized the section on plagiarism from another university's handbook.
A news report stated, "A graduate student of one school, who was considering a teaching assistant's job at the other, was reading the school handbook when he noted that the section warning students against plagiarism was identical to the caution in the handbook of the other university."
Another student said, "The thing that bothered me most was the hypocrisy."
In Romans 2 the apostle Paul exposed the hypocrisy of self-righteous religionists. He said, "You who preach that man should not steal, do you steal?" (v21). Paul warned that people who are quick to judge the sins of others are guilty of the very things they condemn.
We can probably all think of tendencies toward inconsistencies. We see sin in another person's life and we rise up in pride to correct that person. But if we are honest with each other (and ourselves), we can see similar faults in our own lives.
Be careful to examine yourself before pointing out the faults of others. As they say, practice what you preach! God is pleased when our walk matches our talk.

“Wives Who are Like the Church”

In 1992 Kerrin-Lee Gartner of Calvary, Alberta became the first Canadian in history to win Olympic gold in the women's downhill. In Canada she was an immediate sensation.
Shortly after her victory, an announcer interviewing her commented that this must surely be the most significant day of her life.
"No," she replied. "The most significant day was the day of my marriage--but this ranks pretty high."
Even the greatest of achievements cannot compare with the greatest relationships.
Kerrin-Lee expressed the proper biblical priority, that the most important human relationship for those who are married is their marriage. Here at Grace Bible Church, Talent Oregon our midweek Bible study has been focused on God's "Blueprint of a Healthy Marriage." We've already covered His architecture for marriage, along with the husband's role of loving his wife as Christ loved the Church. This week we transition from "Husbands Who are Like Christ" to "Wives Who are Like the Church." Granted, submission may be a dirty word in the world, but not in Scripture and not in the Church. Join us Wednesday at 6:00 as we look at the biblical definition of submission against the negative backdrop of what it is NOT.
