"A Brief Spiel on Heavenly vs. Demonic Wisdom"-Jas 3:13-18

06/06/2026

James, the 1/2 brother of our Lord, has been instructing us similarly to Ken Sande of Peacemaker Ministries, that "Until our hearts are completely purified by God in Heaven, we must set strong guards at the gates of our mouths and fight daily battles to restrain the overflow of our sinful desires."
Long-time professor and biblical counselor, Stuart Scott writes in COMMUNICATION AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION, "One of the biggest obstacles to a good marriage [or any other relationship] is poor communication. We could even say that a marriage relationship is only as good as a couple's ability to send and receive the right message. We see from Scripture that good communication from God's perspective is sending a message that is holy, purposeful, clear and timely...
But persons who communicate in a way that displeases God should not think that they are godly men and women. You may be a deacon or a Sunday school teacher in your church, but your communication will reveal the kind of person you really are, because what comes out of your mouth is usually what is in your heart. If you truly desire to exemplify Christ you will seek to become a good communicator. Everything that Jesus Christ communicated was holy, clear, purposeful, and timely...
Avoiding conflict and resolving conflict will take repeated practice for those who have already created bad habits in this area. The good news is, if you persevere through the learning process, you will begin to enjoy the fruit of your labor. Handling personal differences, differences of opinion, and conflict God's way will cause love and unity to grow in your marriage [and church too], and both of you to grow in wisdom."
This coming Lord's Day we will finish our verse-by-verse study of James 3 with "A Brief Spiel on Heavenly VS. Demonic Wisdom" (Jas 3:13-18) and a consideration on whether we are wise or foolish? Peace-maker or peace-breaker? If you don't have a church home, we cordially invite you to join us for worship!

9-Progressive Sanctification, pt1

06/03/2026

It was 'The Doctor', D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, who boldly proclaimed, "You cannot receive Christ as your justification only, and then, later, decide to refuse or to accept Him as your sanctification. He is one and indivisible, and if you receive Him at all, at once He is made unto you 'wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.' You cannot receive Him as your Savior only, and later decide to accept or refuse Him as your Lord; for the Saviour is the Lord who by His death has [bought] us and therefore owns us. Sanctification is nowhere taught or offered in the New Testament as some additional experience possible to the believer. It is represented rather as something which is already within the believer, something which he must realize more and more and in which he must grow increasingly."
This sanctification of which the doctor speaks is the topic of our midweek live-stream Bible study here at GBC. Join us at 6:00 for "Progressive Sanctification: Simultaneously Righteous & Sinful", pt1.

"Tamed Tongues of the Redeemed"-Jas 3:7-12

05/30/2026

Some years ago, Morgan Blake, a sportswriter for the Atlanta Journal, wrote the following satire: "I am more deadly than the screaming shell from the howitzer. I win without killing. I tear down homes, break hearts, and wreck lives. I travel on the wings of the wind. No innocence is strong enough to intimidate me, no purity pure enough to daunt me. I have no regard for truth, no respect for justice, no mercy for the defenseless. My victims are as numerous as the sands of the sea, and often as innocent. I never forget and seldom forgive. My name is Gossip."
In last week's exposition at GBC, we saw the strongest statement in Scripture on the danger of the tongue, not only that it is a fire and a world of iniquity, but also that it is set on fire by hell. James has already underscored the dangers of an uncontrolled tongue. He will continue to instruct us on man's inability in himself to tame the tongue and he will rebuke man's inconsistency in both blessing God along with cursing those made in His image. Join us for "Tamed Tongues of the Redeemed" (Jas 3:7-12).

8-Assurance of Salvation

05/27/2026

In his Foreword to ASSURED BY GOD, R. C. Sproul insightfully writes, "The full assurance of salvation is not an extra benefit that accrues only to those believers who have striven mightily to reach a higher level of sanctification. Rather, assurance is a gracious gift of God provided for us in salvation and is to be secured early in our Christian lives. In his second epistle, Peter writes: 'Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ' (2 Pet 1:10-11). This exhortation follows on the heels of Peter's call for Christians to manifest the fruit of the Spirit, in a manner similar to the way the apostle Paul urged Christians to manifest the fruit of the Spirit. The key to fruitfulness, the key to manifesting a productive Christian life, is to have a life that is founded solidly on the assurance of one's salvation in Christ. The unsure Christian is the Christian who lacks stability in his or her faith. The unsure Christian is tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine. The unsure Christian is easy prey for the assault of Satan, who does everything in his malevolent power to undermine the Christian's confidence of salvation in Christ. A Christian who lacks such confidence can easily become trapped in insecurity and may lack the boldness to venture out into the domain of a fallen world, armed with the whole armor of God."
So let us help you, dear Christian friend, to grow in your own confidence of what God has wrought in you! Join us for midweek Bible study and our ongoing study of "The Doctrine of Salvation" so that vacillating doubts that weaken your profession would be removed once and for all!
Our live-stream study at 6:00 deals with "Assurance of Salvation."

"The Tempter's Tantalizing Tongue"-Jas 3:1-6

05/22/2026

It is estimated that the average person says about 30,000 words/day, though we might know 1 or 2 who may exceed that!:) THE TONGUE is an organ of taste & speech and is something that the Bible says a whole lot about. It can be sharpened like a sword (Ps 64:3) or like a serpent (Ps 140:3)--a reference to its ability to utter caustic, poisonous words. Like a bow, the tongue can project lies (Jer 9:3), or like an arrow, can be shot out, striking down with its deceit (Jer 9:8). The tongue can be used as a weapon for attack (Jer 18:18), wounding like a sharp sword (Ps 57:4). It can be used viciously for flattery (Ps 5:9; Prov 28:23), backbiting (Ps 15:3; Prov 25:23), deceit (Ps 50:19), unrestrained speech (Ps 73:9), lying (Ps 109:2; Prov 26:28), strife (Ps 31:20), cursing (Hos 7:16), destruction (Ps 52:2), and craftiness (Job 15:5). People may use the tongue to sin (Ps 39:1) or to speak of the Lord's righteousness (Psalm 35:28) and sing praises to God (Ps 126:2). The tongue of the wise promotes health (Prov 12:18), but the mouth of fools spouts folly (Prov 15:2). The Scriptures exhort us to keep the tongue from evil (Ps 34:13), guard it (Prov 21:23), and bridle it (Jas 1:26). And Jesus teaches that it reveals the heart (Matt 12:33-37; 15:18; Lk 6:43-45).
It is such an important topic that James mentions speech in all 5 chapters. In his classic NT passage, James warns specifically against the evil of an uncontrolled and uncharitable tongue. This coming Lord's Day we'll look at "The Tempter's Tantalizing Tongue" (Jas 3:1-6). If you don't have a local church home, consider joining us!
