The live Stream Funeral Service of Mr. Ivan Dale Patterson

Obituary
Ivan Dale Patterson was born on February 4, 1964, in Sylacauga, Alabama, to Wilbert “Jack” and Bessie Patterson. Affectionately known by his family and childhood friends as Dale, he began life’s journey surrounded by the love of family and the values that would shape the man he became.

Dale was educated in the Sylacauga City School System and graduated from Sylacauga High School in 1982. He continued his education at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa,Alabama and later at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Though he had a strong interest in accounting, his professional path took a different direction after an interview with Procter & Gamble while he was a student at Guilford College.

He began his working career at Avondale Mills in Sylacauga, Alabama. Upon moving to Greensboro, NC, he started using his first name and was known as Ivan. He began working at Sears before joining Procter & Gamble in April 1989, where he remained a dedicated employee until his demise. During his years in Sylacauga, Dale explored many interests and enjoyed a full and active life. He participated in Boy Scouts, loved baseball, and enjoyed riding bicycles and motorcycles with his siblings and cousins. He also had a special love for dogs and always seemed to have one nearby.

Ivan was an avid sports fan and particularly enjoyed football and basketball. He spent countless Saturdays and Sundays watching the University of Alabama (“Roll Tide”) football team and the Dallas Cowboys. He never missed an opportunity to boast about his teams, specifically Alabama. He also loved watching NBA basketball. During his teenage years, he spent many days helping his father repair cars. Over time, he became known as the family mechanic and could always find an alternative solution to getting things fixed. Working with his hands brought him joy, and he carried a confident, resourceful spirit that led him to approach many tasks as a mechanic, electrician, carpenter, and problem-solver long before online tutorials became common.

He was a member of St. Thomas United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and participated faithfully in the life of the church. His Christian faith continued to be an important part of his life after moving to Greensboro, where he remained a believer grounded in faith. Ivan Dale loved his family deeply. In 1997, he united in marriage with Mary “Angela” Watkins and their family was made whole with the birth of their two beloved children. He treasured his role as a father and took great pride in teaching them lessons that would guide them into adulthood. He also took his role as a husband seriously by being a faithful caregiver to his wife of almost 30 years.

On May 13, 2026, Ivan Dale peacefully departed from his earthly life to his eternal rest surrounded by his family.

Ivan Dale is survived by his parents, Wilbert “Jack” and Bessie Patterson, a loving and devoted wife, Angela Patterson; his daughter, Selena Patterson; his son, Clayton Patterson both of Greensboro, NC; his sister-in-law, Lourie Glenn of Jacksonville, FL, his aunts, Elaine Baker of Los Angeles, CA and Nettie McGhee of Palm Desert, CA; his uncle, Earnest Patterson of Inglewood, CA; his siblings, Melanie (Calvin) Smith of Tampa, FL, Adrienne (Gerard) Brown of Kernersville, NC, Willethia “Renee” (Alvin) Patterson of Eclectic, AL, Teresa (Anson) Gleaton of Atlanta, GA, and Conthia (Melvin) Wilson of Alpine, AL. He is also survived by a special group of nieces including Brittany Smith, Juaneka Patterson and London Brown and nephews including Calvin Smith II and Cody Brown. He is also survived by a host of other family and friends who will cherish his memory.
