The Criminal Justice Task Force, Immigration Justice Task Force, and Reproductive Justice Task Force of UU Faith Action NJ strongly condemn the treatment of pregnant women being incarcerated by ICE.

We are appalled by the reports of the neglect and mistreatment of our most vulnerable neighbors. This contradicts not just our values as Unitarian Universalists, but our values as a nation. It is unthinkable that our government, funded by public tax dollars, shows such callous disregard for the basic health and safety of pregnant women being held in ICE prisons. And yet we must acknowledge that the unthinkable has become the norm at this point in our country’s history.

There is no justification for holding pregnant people in ICE jails. They do not represent a threat to our country, but the opposite now is true. Our government is a threat to the health and well being of the most vulnerable among us.

Since it is abundantly clear that the for-profit ICE prisons owned and operated by Geo Group and Core Civic cannot meet even the basic needs required by pregnant women, we demand that our elected representatives call upon ICE and DHS to immediately discontinue the incarceration of pregnant women. All women who are currently being held must be released to their homes and families here in the USA while their legal cases are being addressed in the courts. In addition ICE must declare an end to future incarceration of pregnant women.

Here in New Jersey we demand the release of all pregnant women being held at Delaney Hall and the Elizabeth Detention Center.

Ultimately we believe that the system of for-profit incarceration created by ICE and DHS must be abolished entirely. Our faith tradition requires us to speak out against injustice and cruelty, and our government’s attack on immigrants is inherently just that.

In the study by the University of Exeter, authors identified some factors that helped push "tipping points" that we mentioned in yesterday's post. These intersect, and the more factors that converge on a specific environmental measure help to ensure the measure continues to build energy. This is a great way to identify advocacy strategies!

In the last few days, ICE has escalated its efforts to round up, cage, and deport members of the Haitian community in Springfield, OH, who have recently lost the Temporary Protected Status designation. The local Haitian community asked allies to act, to show up, and show out in solidarity. Yesterday, Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice joined UUs from across the country for a vigil and to bear witness to this cruelty.
