This Spring you may have noticed a simple yet beautiful display adorning the playground gates at our church: ribbons of changing colors gently moving in the breeze. What may appear at first to be a decorative touch is actually a visual journey through some of the most meaningful moments of the Christian year.
Beginning on Ash Wednesday, purple ribbons are tied to the gates, marking the start of Lent. Purple has long been associated with repentance, reflection, and preparation. As we walk through the forty days leading to Easter, these ribbons quietly remind us of Christ's journey toward the cross and our own call to prayer and spiritual renewal.
As Palm Sunday arrives, green ribbons are added. Green symbolizes life, growth, and hope. They remind us of the palm branches that welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem and of the new life God continually nurtures within us.
On Maundy Thursday, yellow ribbons appear. Their bright color reflects the sacred fellowship of the Last Supper, the light of Christ's love, and the commandment Jesus gave his disciples to love one another as he had loved them.
Easter morning brings white ribbons, proclaiming the joy of resurrection. White is the color of celebration, victory, and new life. It announces the good news that Christ is risen and that death does not have the final word.
Following Easter, orange ribbons are added for Ascension Sunday. Orange speaks of the glory of Christ's ascension and the dawn of a new chapter in God's work through the Church. It serves as a bridge between the joy of Easter and the coming gift of the Holy Spirit.
Finally, this past Sunday, red ribbons appeared for Pentecost, representing the fire of the Holy Spirit that descended upon the disciples. Red reminds us that the Church is not merely a building but a living community empowered and sent into the world to share God's love.
Together, these ribbons create a visual testimony of the Christian story. They invite neighbors, children, families, and all who pass by to see the changing seasons of faith reflected in color and beauty.
This installation would not be possible without the faithful work of three dedicated members of our congregation: Myrene Reyes, Wendi Barry, and Marg Edwards. Year after year, they quietly and lovingly tend to this ministry, often without recognition, transforming ordinary playground gates into a witness of faith for our community. Their creativity, dedication, and servant hearts remind us that ministry often happens in small acts of beauty that point others toward God.
On behalf of the congregation, thank you, Myrene, Wendi, and Marg, for the countless hours you have given and for the joy and inspiration your work brings to our church family and our neighbors. Through your hands, the story of Christ continues to be told in a way that is both simple and profound.
