Twenty-five years ago today, our pastor, Rev. Mark Burns, watched the terrible news unfold as the towers fell, the Pentagon was attacked, and a plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field.

Like so many that day, Rev. Burns didn’t know what to do. But he knew he needed to do something.

So he put on his robe and stole, opened the doors of the church wide, and stood on our front steps.

He simply stood there.

For everyone passing along Godwin Boulevard to see.

A quiet reminder to our community that even in the midst of fear, grief, and terrible uncertainty, there is still hope. There is still love. And God is still present.

Today, we stand in solemn remembrance with all who continue to carry that hope into the darkness of our world—with those who still choose to wear love on their sleeves when so many powerful forces seek to divide us. For those who speak and work against acts of violence, especially against the innocent. Acts which persist in our world today.

From 10:00–11:00 a.m. today, our pastor, Rev. Jason Stump, will once again stand on those front steps with the church doors open.

You are welcome to stand with him.

You are welcome to come inside our sanctuary to pray, remember, grieve, or simply sit in silence.

Twenty-five years later, the doors are still open.

Hope still stands.

You are not alone.
You are loved.

What an amazing day of worship!
We dedicated our new and renovated spaces as we continue imagining how we will adapt our building for ministry.

We were inspired by flutist Megan Edwards and our Minister of Music, Paul Putnam.

We welcomed folks worshipping with us for the first time.

We heard a good word during our announcements from young AJ as he told us, “Have a good day!”

And of course, we had cake.

The joyous energy of this day far exceeds what you’d imagine from any attendance count.

We recommend trying us out.

Children’s Disaster Services, a program of Brethren Disaster Ministries, has been meeting the needs of children since 1980 by setting up childcare centers in shelters and disaster assistance centers nationwide. This 25-hour training equips volunteers to understand and respond to children who have encountered both human-caused and natural disasters, providing a calm, safe, and reassuring presence in the midst of chaos.

Chalice Christian Church (DOC) in Virginia Beach, Virginia, will be hosting a Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) training program October 9-10, 2026.

Participants will learn how to create a safe environment and offer therapeutic play activities designed to relieve stress and calm fears. The training includes a simulated shelter experience with an overnight stay. Anyone completing the course will have the opportunity to become a certified Children’s Disaster Services volunteer. Please note that many of the concepts taught are also highly beneficial for supporting children experiencing personal difficulties, such as a pet dying or a friend moving away.
