Some weeks ago, as I laid in bed, waiting for sleep while saying my prayers, I began to reflect on the question, “What is it about my experience here at St. Paul’s that has made it so special?” What came to me was a deep awareness of how you have given me a place to be. A place to be. Let that sink in for a moment. If it seems trivial or inconsequential, you need to sit with it some more until you realize how significant, how precious, and how rare it is. In a world where loneliness is almost an epidemic and people feel more isolated than ever, and countless souls wonder if their life matters at all to anyone or if they have a purpose greater than the pain of going on, I was given a place to be.

Jesus turns to his disciples and asks, “Who do you say I am?” When I was a teenager our youth minister challenged us to find our own personal answer. I first read C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity at that time, and like millions of other people, was deeply affected by his thinking.
To the question “Who do you say Jesus is?” Lewis said there are only three options: Lord, Liar, or Lunatic. Either he claimed to be God even though he knew he was not (he lied) or he thought he was God but he was not (he was a lunatic) or he was who he claimed to be (the Lord). Lewis went on to analyze each possibility to discern which is most plausible and (spoiler alert) he concluded Jesus is exactly who he claims to be – the Son of God, the Messiah, the Lord.
If he was a liar or a lunatic, we ought to steer clear of anything having to do with him, starting with the Christian church. But if he is God in human flesh… well then, like the hymn says, this demands your soul, your life, your all. Nothing less, nothing tepid, nothing perfunctory would be appropriate.

With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy…
• If He looks just like you, your God might be too small.
• If He talks just like you, your God might be too small.
• If He believes everything you believe and holds the same opinions you hold, your God might be too small.
• If, in your mind, He has a gender, your God might be too small.

To speak of God as He is to make God small, limited, human. Even naming God God functions to limit what/who it is we seek to describe. I remember once hearing a speaker say he never uses the name God, but opts instead for the Holy One. It is his way of highlighting how when we talk about God we are talking about what is ineffable.

Have you ever heard anyone refer to the bible as a Question Book? Doubtful, but it might not be as farfetched as it seems because, according to one source, it contains 2,506 questions. Of all the questions recorded in the bible, some answers are chiseled in stone, but many are the kind you must return to again and again. Sometimes, like with what is most important to me right now, circumstances change requiring new reflection. Other times, new information, new perspective, new insight need to be considered and the answer needs to make sense of what was not available before.
