One of the most popular of medieval saints, St George was a martyr, dying for his Christian faith in the early years of the fourth century during the persecution initiated by the Emperor Diocletian.

The carillon celebrates St George’s Day with traditional English hymns today, including ”I Vow to Thee”, “Jerusalem” and the popular march “Land of Hope and Glory.” 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Happy St. George’s Day to everyone celebrating.

The Great Vigil of Easter, led by the young people of the congregation, begins at 8 pm tonight. Held in the fellowship hall, it is an ancient liturgy of Scripture, renewal of baptismal vows, and we add dramatic readings. All is in darkness, then candlelight, until we burst forth in light and in joyful singing our first hymn of the Resurrected Christ (bring a bell to ring!).

Sunday is Palm Sunday, when at 9:30 am the churches of Main Street join together in the annual Palm Sunday Parade. We gather at St Paul’s Episcopal Church with the opening hymn “All Hail the Power of Jesus Name”.

“Hosana” means “Save us,” a plea of the people for deliverance.

In the Orthodox Church, the Saturday before Palm Sunday is Lazarus Saturday, remembering the miracle before Jesus entered Jerusalem.

Troparion of the The Lord’s Entry Into Jerusalem:
By raising Lazarus from the dead before Thy Passion,
Thou didst confirm the universal resurrection, O Christ God.
Like the children with the palms of victory,
we cry out to Thee, O Vanquisher of Death:
“Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!”

In celebration of Pi Day (3.14159… is also 22/7), for the numerical constant pi (π), the carillon plays The Pi Song at 1:59 pm. It renders the numbers to corresponding notes but I doubt anyone will want to sing the melody. Unlike the irrational number, the song will end.

The day celebrates one of the world’s most important mathematical constants. And who doesn’t love pie?

In celebration of International Women’s Day, the carillon plays “March of the Women” at 3 pm and again Monday at noon.

Several social media posts by ministers note that this year’s Gospel reading appointed for today, Lent III, is John 4:5-30, is about Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well and what lessons we can draw from her learning and proclaiming Jesus the Christ.

The carillon celebrates George Washington Day/Washington’s Birthday (more than he would have wished, thinking such celebrations were too monarchical), with patriotic songs and “The World Turned Upside Down”, a versatile tune the British band played during the surrender at Yorktown.

I appreciate the opportunity to play the Christ Episcopal Church carillon this morning. I started with “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” (HYFRYDOL), then an improvisation for Transfiguration Sunday with some hints of Old 100th, and then I played “O Worship the King.” I ended with “The W&M Hymn” (for a Jeffersonian tribute), 2 verses posted.
