Listen back to last Sunday's sermon ( #2 of our Song of Songs Summer Sermon Series) or read a manuscript copy via the link below.

"We’re continuing our Summer Sermon Series...through the Old Testament Book of Song of Songs: A series of love poems that show us what it really looks like to love and to be loved, in our lives, and with Jesus - to love Jesus and be loved by Him.

What we see in-particular in the verses we read today that close out Chapter 1 is one particular clarifying aspect of Jesus’ Love: That this is not just ‘love’ sentimentally, nor feel-good, nor merely helping you through life. But that:

- Jesus’ Love is REDEEMING and EXALTING.
- Jesus PICKS up and LIFTS UP."

Join us this Sunday - June 7th - as our Summer Sermon Series continues: We'll be reading the remainder of Songs of Songs Chapter 1, seeing the Redeeming Love of the King & Groom Character (picturing Jesus) that both picks up and then lifts up.

Worship service at 4pm meets at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church (4910 Claremont Ave) in Stockton.

"Follow in the tracks of the flock...we will make for you ornaments of gold, studded with silver...behold, you are beautiful, my love".

"I really like the summary of Song of Songs that a modern-day Eastern Orthodox priest, Fr. Lawrence Farley, offers in his commentary, where he writes:

'In our present time of demonic noise, the Song offers us a divine melody for the heart. In a time of gender confusion, it offers us reaffirmation; in a time of pornography-inspired depression, it offers us a joy that descends from heaven to Earth, a gift from God to cheer, inspire, and guide. The Song represents an opening to the paradise of love between the first man and his bride, a garden from which our race has long been banished. A rabbi once said that all eternity in its entirety was not as worthy as the day on which this Song was given to Israel. Let us begin by listening to the first notes of that heavenly and paradisal song'.

So let’s jump in and look at the opening 4 verses together today..."

'O King and Judge of the nations: We remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our armed forces, who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy; grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.'

"You’ve got to root yourself in faith where you believe Jesus is rooting you.

Even if it’s not the most glamorous, the most prosperous, the largest church to look at. It might even seem like a bit of a 'worm' of a church, to coin from Isaiah 41.

But if Jesus is there as the vine, and you are branching off of him, really intentionally rooted in this place in this church with these people, then that WILL bear fruit.

But if we’re drifting, if we’re in and out, if we’re here there and everywhere, if we’re casually visiting, if we’re only dropping in when we’re looking for a pick me up in life, then we’re just a pile of disconnected, dead branches gathered together doing nothing and bearing no fruit, and there’s no point to that."
