This Sunday at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, our pastor, Rev. Dr. Fredrick Lemons II, preached a timely message from Ephesians 4:26–32 about anger, irritation, restraint, and spiritual maturity.
The truth is, everybody has moments when somebody says the wrong thing, uses the wrong tone, and catches us at the wrong time. In those moments, the real question becomes: What will come out of us?
This message reminds us that the issue goes deeper than profanity. Words can build, wound, heal, divide, restore, or destroy. Spiritual maturity teaches us how to govern our mouths, manage our reactions, and refuse to let somebody else’s behavior control our character.
Before you say it, send it, post it, or respond, pause and ask:
Will this build or break?
Will this heal or humiliate?
Will this minister grace?

Even when our attitudes and dispositions falter, God's love remains. He chooses to come in, to commune with us, regardless of our outward appearance or the 'stench' of sin. This divine acceptance shows a profound, unwavering grace.

We must be cautious of a gospel that offers crowns without crosses, blessings without burdens, and freedom without sacrifice. True faith acknowledges both resurrection and crucifixion.

For those in the Black church, freedom isn't a casual gift. It's a hard-won truth. We know the sting of chains while America declared liberty. We've lived the gap between parchment promises and denied practice, between law and lashes. Yet, with tears and faith, we believed in God as liberator. Today, we celebrate spiritual freedom, not just political.

After all you've been through—the living, serving, praying, crying, fighting, burying, and forgiving—you shouldn't need anyone to celebrate your journey. Remember what Christ has done and praise Him for bringing you from where you were to where you are now. You're not who you used to be, and for that, you can thank God.
