Mark 4:35-41
“That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!””

Even the disciples struggled to believe that Jesus would always be there. The disciples found themselves in the middle of a storm and they wonder if Jesus even cares about them. Jesus ends up calming the storm. He tells the wind to calm down and the waves to cease.

Sometimes in the mist of the storms of life, we wonder if God is even there. It is in these moments that we need to realize that Jesus is walking with us, even in the most treacherous storms. Jesus is there to calm the wind and the waves…our only job is to have faith.

PRAYER
Lord, give us faith to believe that you were always there. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Psalm 23
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

I will never pretend to know exactly what you’re going through…

I will never give you simplistic answers to complex questions…

I will never minimize your experience…

But what I will do…I will remind you that no matter what you’re facing…God is right there.

PRAYER
Lord, thank you for walking with me in my darkest moments. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Psalm 13:1-6
“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall. But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.”

Even when it seems like God has forgotten about you…he hasn’t. Even when it seems like God is hidden from you…he is right there. Even when you struggle with peace…God is present. Even when it feels like everyone is against you…God is for you.

In these moment…trust in God’s unfailing love! I’ll be doing this today!

PRAYER
Lord help me to trust in your unfailing love! In Jesus’ name, Amen!

2 Corinthains 12:9
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

We talked this week about not boasting about how you’ve earned your salvation. Paul says if we boast, we ought to boast in our weaknesses, because that is when Christ power will be evident in our lives. Instead of trying to convince everyone you’ve got all your ducks in a row and that you’ve got it all together, be honest with people about how weak you are…that way they can see Christ working in your life!

PRAYER
Lord, thank you for working in my life. Help me to boast about my weaknesses, so your power can be seen in my life! In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Luke 15:11-24
11Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
13“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
17“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20So he got up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
21“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

You are never too lost. You are never too far gone. You are always welcomed home! God will always be here for you…so will we at Spurgeon!

PRAYER
Lord, thank you for always welcoming me home. Thank you for never making me feel like I was a lost cause! In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Romans 3:10
“There is no one righteous, not even one.”

I think we convince ourselves that there are righteous people and unrighteous people. And since we know ourselves, we probably place ourselves in the unrighteous category. We beat ourselves up because we continually fail at living a holy life. We convince ourselves that God couldn’t love us because we mess up too much and too often. But the Bible repeatedly reminds us that we are all in the same camp!

All of us have sin!
No one is righteous?
All of us fall short of becoming what God desires!
No one is without fault!

This is why it is so important to trust in Jesus for our salvation. His grace is sufficient to save you and keep you…because no one is righteous!

PRAYER
Lord, thank you for your grace! Help me to continue to trust in you! In Jesus’ name, Amen!

EPHESIANS 2:8-9
8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast.

We talked about being saved by God’s grace on Sunday. Grace is such a marvelous gift that it seems incomprehensible…it’s hard to believe! In our passage today, Paul makes the same argument. He talks about how we are saved by grace and not from ourselves. We are not saved by our works…or our righteousness…or our efforts…so we have nothing to boast about! If we could earn our salvation…we wouldn’t need Jesus. If we could earn our salvation…we could boast all day long about how amazing we are. Maybe this is why we are saved by grace! Embrace it. Live in the truth of it!

PRAYER
Lord, thank you for saving us by grace. Thank you for not leaving it up to me. In Jesus! name, Amen!

GALATIANS 4:8-11
8Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. 9But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? 10You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! 11I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.

We talked about how we are known by God. What does it mean to you to know that God knows you?

I am amazed that God knows me better than I know myself…and he still loves me! Let that sink in for a moment! God knows everything about you…the good and the bad…and he still chooses to love you! The psalmist says it this way:

PSALM 139:1-4
1You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
2You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.

God. Knows. You. And. Still. Loves. You! That’s good news!

PRAYER
Lord, thank you for knowing me and still choosing to love me! I am forever grateful for this truth! In Jesus’ name, Amen!
