To be clear, St. John's Chapel UCC is NOT closing, disbanding, dissolving or shutting down.

We are exploring the possibility of developing part of our land into affordable housing. That doesn’t mean the church is closing.

It means we’re imagining a different way of being present in our community.

It’s not either/or.
It’s both/and.

We want to still gather as a faith community AND explore ways we can serve our community.

Our ministry may look different, but our commitment to being present, being the church loving and serving our neighbors remains. ❤️

No Worship This Sunday!

It’s Labor Day weekend, and lots of our folks are squeezing in one last trip to the lake, gathering with family, traveling, resting, and soaking up the last little bits of summer. ☀️✨🌙

So this Sunday, we’re taking worship on the road. ❤️

Find God, Divine, the Holy at the lake.
Around the breakfast table.
On the porch with your coffee.
In a long nap.
In laughter with people you love.
Or wherever the weekend takes you.

There will be no Sunday worship service this week.

Rest. Play. Be with your people. Pay attention to the sacred wherever you find yourself.

This past Sunday, our congregation took an important step together. We voted yes to move forward in partnership with the Springfield Community Land Trust to explore how our church property might help shelter people, through the creation of affordable housing.

This vote invites us to explore the next chapter in the story of St. John’s Chapel UCC.

Through every season and every chapter, one truth remains: the church is the people.

This exploration offers us an opportunity to put our values into action by creating safe and affordable places to call home, which strengthen our community.

St. John’s Chapel UCC, Osage Prairie Gardens, the SJC gardens, and others, will remain present in meaningful and life-giving ways.

As we enter this season, we ask that you join us in prayer, and support as we continue to explore ways to be the church, and embody the gospel, while responding to the needs of our community today.
