Come join the Minnehaha Neighborhood Council in partnership with the Spokane Parks Foundation, the City of Spokane, Spokane Parks and Recreation and others as we say farewell to Summer and head into Fall. Bring a blanket, some chairs, a frisbee, and anything else that brings you comfort and come chill out at one of Spokane’s hidden gems, Minnehaha Park.

The Minnehaha Neighborhood Council will be providing free hotdogs, snacks, popsicles, and water (while supplies last) as part of the funding we receive with the Community Engagement Grants from the city. It’s a great program and we thank the City of Spokane for continuing to provide that. We will also have yard games for all to enjoy.

We have some amazing organizations, vendors, and small businesses joining us for everyone to enjoy. We thank them for setting up shop and we’re excited to have them this year.

Come join us this Thursday for the Minnehaha Neighborhood Council meeting. We will be discussing local neighborhood issues as well as looking to reschedule the National Night Out Against Crime event and replace it with a more community driven fun day for anyone and everyone who’d like to attend. We’d like to make this event a little bigger than we usually do and talk about some ways we can possibly support the fire victims from this tragedy. Please join us if you’d like to be part of that conversation or have any ideas. We’d love to hear feedback.

AIR QUALITY & FACE MASKS: Remember, it is better to stay indoors than to mask.
The right face mask can only provide some protection for some people for a limited time.
Respirator masks labeled N95 or N100 provide some protection – they filter out fine particles, but not hazardous gases (such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and acrolein). This type of mask can be found at many hardware and home repair stores and pharmacies. If you decide to keep a mask on hand, read these tips:
- Choose an N95 or N100 mask that has two straps that go around your head. Don’t choose a one-strap paper dust mask or a surgical mask that hooks around your ears – these don’t protect you against the fine particles in smoke.
- Choose a size that will fit over your nose and under your chin. It should seal tightly to your face. These masks don’t come in sizes that fit young children.
- Don’t use bandanas or towels (wet or dry) or tissue held over the mouth and nose. These may relieve dryness but they won’t protect your lungs from wildfire smoke.
- Anyone with lung or heart disease, or who is chronically ill, should check with their medical provider before using any mask. Using respirator masks can make it harder to breathe, which may make existing medical conditions worse. The extra effort it takes to breathe through a respirator mask can make it uncomfortable to use them for very long. These masks should be used mostly by people who have to go outdoors.
- Respirator masks shouldn't be used on young children – they don’t seal well enough to provide protection. They also don’t seal well on people with beards.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- In order to help people impacted by the devastating wildfires in Spokane County this weekend, here is a list of donation drop-off locations across the county.

It is with a heavy heart that we must cancel this event due to the poor air quality projected over the next few days as well as the unpredictability of the fires. Minnehaha Park is one of the most natural and wooded areas in the city and we don’t want to have any more unnecessary risk to others health and safety.

We here with the Minnehaha Neighborhood Council are devastated by what has happened in the last 24 hours. We have friends, family, and community members that have lost their homes to this tragedy.

We don’t know what the future holds for these fires over the course of the next week, possibly longer… our thoughts, prayers, and positive energy go out to all affected by this. Let’s get through this together as a community. Help those in need if you can. Now is a time for unity and to rally for our neighbors who have lost everything.

As for this event, our council team has talked about doing a larger event at a later date in hopes of aiding those who are feeling every bit of pain right now. The Minnehaha Neighborhood Council stands with everyone who has gone through this most painful time. We love our law enforcement, EMS, and fire fighters because without them we’d be lost in these situations. If you see them thank them for their amazing efforts. Please stay safe and listen to all directions from our first responders. We will get through this.

Hello to our neighbors! Our event is coming up in just a few days. The only thing that will stop this from happening is if the smoke from any fires gets unhealthy to be outside. We will be sure to give at least 24 hours advance notice if we need to cancel this event. We appreciate your understanding if that ends up being the case. Our thoughts, prayers, and positive energy go out to anyone affected by the fires and to our fire department who work tirelessly at their jobs.

Question to our neighborhood… Who should we invite to our next Neighborhood Council meeting?

A bit of context… at our meetings, we invite leaders from local government, public safety, and other organizations to either educate us or answer our burning questions about our neighborhood/city.

Next week! Don’t forget! In partnership with the Spokane Parks Foundation and the City of Spokane. We have some great vendors this year with services for purchase: The Squeeze, Tina’s Tres Leches, and Lucky Ducks Face Painting. Come by and support some local businesses!

The Minnehaha Neighborhood Council will be offering free hotdogs, snacks, and water (while supplies last). Cooper Elementary and the PTO will be there giving out popsicles and are bringing yard games. Mounted Patrol, SPD, SFD will be there and our city leaders might make an appearance. Shine 104.9 will be playing music at their booth. We will have a raffle (donations always accepted) with some cool prizes to include Spokane Indians tickets! The Red Robin mascot will be there for the kids as well!

No matter what neighborhood you live in, all are welcome. Come on by and see us!
