On this Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary time the Catechism reflects the following on today’s readings:

The fruits of charity are joy, peace, and mercy; charity demands beneficence and fraternal correction; it is benevolence; it fosters reciprocity and remains disinterested and generous; it is friendship and communion:

Love is itself the fulfillment of all our works. There is the goal; that is why we run: we run toward it, and once we reach it, in it we shall find rest.*

Earlier this year, the Holy Father invited all of us to prayerfully read the documents of the Second Vatican Council.

I’ve begun working through all sixteen documents. Today’s passage struck me in a way I hadn’t considered before.

Scripture Should Be Venerated Like the Eucharist:

-Therefore, like the Christian religion itself, all the preaching of the Church must be nourished and regulated by Sacred Scripture. (§21) Dei Verbum

The Council reminds us that Scripture isn’t just a source of teaching—it is something the Church receives with reverence, allowing it to shape every aspect of her life.

In this Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time, the Catechism reflects on today's Gospel reading from Matthew 16:21-27.

The Lord grieves over the rich, because they find their consolation in the abundance of goods.* “Let the proud seek and love earthly kingdoms, but blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.” Abandonment to the providence of the Father in heaven frees us from anxiety about tomorrow. Trust in God is a preparation for the blessedness of the poor. They shall see God.

"The Mass isn't about selling you Catholicism; it's about the worship of Almighty God, of which we are privileged to take part."

The Mass was never meant to entertain us or convince us that Catholicism is worth our time.

The Mass is first about God. We come together to worship Him, hear His Word, offer ourselves with Christ, and receive Jesus truly present in the Eucharist.

That means the value of Mass does not depend on the music, the homily, or whether we “felt something” that day.

Shia LaBeouf put it simply:
“The Mass isn’t about selling you Catholicism; it’s about the worship of Almighty God, of which we are privileged to take part.”

That changes how we approach Sunday. We are not an audience watching something happen. We are being invited into the sacrifice of Christ made present on the altar. Jesus said, “Do this in memory of me” (Luke 22:19).

💬 If Mass gave you nothing emotionally, would you still go simply because God is worthy of your worship?
