I was telling my husband about a dream I had about a week ago where I fell asleep in the kids church room during service and when I woke up, my class was missing. I thought, oh no! I’m in trouble now! Thankfully, I woke up for real and realized that was not the case. Whew! Don’t worry, parents. Your kids will always be safe! He told me I have funny stress dreams. He always dreams about fighting to protect himself or our family. That got me thinking about our fight or flight response. I’d like to think I’m brave enough to fight, but we never know until we faced with it. That led me to another thought on a spiritual level. Our “praise Him anyway” response. Our spiritual fight or flight is one of two things: we lean into God, or we distance ourselves from God.
Psalm 34:1 says, “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” When the Lord is at the center of our lives, we are less tempted to choose “flight.” We know of His goodness, provision, and promises. So, we choose to fight. We praise Him anyway. We fight our battles on our knees and in praise. “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-4. When you want to run, praise Him. When you feel scared, worried, confused…praise Him. When you don’t feel like it, PRAISE HIM anyway. Fight with the power of the Spirit that lives inside you.
