The principle of weaving regular, Christ-centered rest into our schedule is a piece of peculiarly divine brilliance, a revelation that—while clearly counterintuitive to many of us—is for our flourishing and God’s glory...Just as Eve was created so that man wouldn’t have to live alone, the Sabbath was created so that man wouldn’t have to live exhausted. The only problem is, we’re not good at following rules—even when they’re good for us.
No amount of vacationing, streaming entertainment, or social-media escapism will give us true rest. Running to Christ, submitting to his provision and direction, is the only real and lasting sabbath for the soul"

Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee. Daniel 6:16.

Daniel was high in command. The accusing host of evil angels stirred up the presidents and princes to envy and jealousy.... These agents of Satan sought to make his faithfulness to God the cause of his destruction....

The king was ignorant of the subtle mischief purposed against Daniel. With full knowledge of the king’s decree, Daniel still bows before his God, “his windows being open.” He considers supplication to God of so great importance that he would rather sacrifice his life than relinquish it.

God did not prevent Daniel’s enemies from casting him into the lions’ den; He permitted evil angels and wicked men thus far to accomplish their purpose; but it was that He might make the deliverance of His servant more marked, and the defeat of the enemies of truth and righteousness more complete.... Through the courage of this one man who chose to follow right rather than policy, Satan was to be defeated, and the name of God was to be exalted and honored.

Early the next morning King Darius hastened to the den and “cried with a lamentable voice,” “O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?”

The voice of the prophet replied: “O king, live forever. My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me.” ...

Daniel in the lions’ den was the same Daniel who stood before the king as chief among the ministers of state and as a prophet of the Most High. A man whose heart is stayed upon God will be the same in the hour of his greatest trial as he is in prosperity, when the light and favor of God and of man beam upon him.... The power that is near to deliver from physical harm or distress is also near to save from the greater evil, making it possible for the servant of God to maintain his integrity under all circumstances, and to triumph through divine grace.9Prophets and Kings, 543-545.

Do you wonder if God really has a plan for your life? Maybe He had a plan once, but you are no longer sure – possibly you were mistaken. In Isaiah 44 (vss. 24-28), we learn God had a plan to release the people of Israel from exile in Babylon, and that it would be fulfilled by Cyrus, King of Persia, who would not be born for more than a hundred years.
In Isaiah 45, God assures Cyrus He will make his path clear and remove any obstacles that get in his way. God says, “I will give you the treasures of darkness”, that are currently hidden away. Literally, the Israelites would need someone to overcome the obstacles and rescue them from captivity. The treasures had been hidden away, typically underground. History tells us Cyrus came away from his conquests with thousands of pounds of gold and silver.
This passage is for us as well. We too face obstacles, even when we follow God’s plan. God guarantees we can trust Him to clear the path for us.
Isaiah 44:24 “Thus says the Lord…: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself.”
But that does not mean things will be easy for us. In the hard times we can choose God and rely upon Him. He loves us and calls us by name; He helps us get through it.
What a great source of hope that is!"

Jesus does not call on us to follow Him, and then forsake us. If we surrender our lives to His service, we can never be placed in a position for which God has not made provision.—Gospel Workers, 263.
