We live in a culture that celebrates extremes.

Some people live recklessly — chasing every desire, every opportunity, every impulse. Others live fearfully — hesitant, withdrawn, afraid to step fully into what God has called them to do. But in Ephesians 5, the Apostle Paul offers a different path entirely:

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise…” (Ephesians 5:15)

Careful living is not fearful living. And it’s definitely not reckless living. It’s intentional living.

As believers, we are called to wake up from spiritual complacency, recognize the influence of darkness around us, and make the most of our time by choosing what truly matters: love.

We tend to think of wisdom as one specific choice amongst the many different options that may be available to us. And so we judge ourselves - and others - by decisions that we hope fit neatly into a categorical box of right or wrong.

But the reality is that our lives are often much more complex. The wisdom we need is not really about a preferred option, but rather it is a lens through which we measure all the choices that are available to us.

This decision results in this outcome, and that decision leads to that outcome - and what’s left in our hands is the need to discern which one is most appropriate. Truth, timing, risk, and character are all factors that need to be considered, and they should govern our final decision on every matter.

As such, Apostle Paul writes to believers with a clear recommendation concerning how they choose to navigate the ever-changing culture. He says to simply, “Live carefully.” We must take this ancient wisdom and embrace it for our modern context to ensure that we use our lives to make the most of every opportunity.
