The Church of the Japanese Martyrs was named in honor of the 26 martyrs from Japan who were canonized in 1862, 5 years before the church was established. The first pastor of the parish named the church after these 26 martyrs from Japan. It is often the custom to name a new church in honor of the most recently canonized saint.
