"If I refuse to allow one to suffer for the sake of Christ, if I do not see such suffering as the greatest honor to any follower of the Crucified, then I know nothing of Calvary love." - Amy Carmichael, IF

So often, out of our compassion, we wish to deliver those in pain, discomfort, misery, or sickness. However, it is often in these times that such persons learn lessons they NEVER would have otherwise. In my life, I can reflect on my darkest valleys being my richest moments with the Lord. And if someone had 'rescued' me from those pits too soon, even with a good heart, I'm not sure I would have ever gained the enlightenment I had. While we always wish to spare pain, we mustn't ever rob God of the work He could do in ANY circumstance. Indeed, He does work in EVERY circumstance!

A Prayer for the End of School Year:
God of every ending and beginning, as this school year comes to a close, we thank you, for the teachers who guided with patience,
for the students who grew, and for the moments of joy, challenge, and wonder.
We pray for every child finishing a grade, every teen wrapping up exams, and every family shifting into a new season. Give rest where there’s weariness, peace where there’s worry, and excitement for what lies ahead.
Let this summer be a time of renewal, of laughter, stillness, adventure, and connection. And may we never forget that you are with us in every season. Amen.

The Father...
Our end wasn't ever meant to be a destination.
We are not living, hoping to go to a place, hoping to go to heaven someday.
No, we live in Christ with the promise that through Him, we will reach the Father.
A person is our end, not a location.
It is more than streets of gold, no more tears, or turning grey.
Home with our Father is where we are heading.
What a privilege we have to walk each other home.

Sabbath...
Pause, rest, repose, wait, relax, Selah...
This was God's gift made for US.
And He clarifies that it was NOT something WE were made for.

Tension.

Why is it difficult for some of us to rest?
Why is it a struggle to take a day off?
Why is it hard to pause?

We know we need it.
We know we are commanded to observe it.
We know we would benefit from it.
We know, we know, we know...
And yet, it is just not something that comes so naturally to us.
Just as the Lord God expressed in His infinite knowing of us. He understands that it is not always an easy thing to Sabbath.
However, if He, in His ultimate completeness, in His perfect fullness, in His absolutely endless ability and power - if He, not even needing rest, rested, how much more certainly do we require the reprieve for our definitely limited resource of personhood?

There is a chilling warning in 2 Chronicles 36:20-21
"And those who escaped from the sword he carried away to Babylon, where they became servants to him and his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia, to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her Sabbaths. As long as she lay desolate she kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years."

Israel had failed to allow the earth to rest for 490 years, accumulating 70 missed Sabbaths.
God takes this matter so seriously that this is part of the reason they spend the next 70 years in exile!
He will MAKE us lie down in green pastures (Psalm 23).
He will keep a record of what belongs to Him.
The Sabbath is Holy.
The Sabbath is His.
WE are His.

Our struggle with Sabbath is rooted in our belief in self-sufficiency, our belief that there needs to be motion for there to be productivity; that productivity is needed for something to be quantified as valuable.
Our busy human minds and hands cannot ever increase our value in the eyes of the one who saw our unformed essence (Psalm 139).
So, rest.
Leave the dishes, leave the emails, leave tomorrow's worries.
Receive the gift God designed and modeled specifically for you.
