Ave Verum Corpus, by Camille Saint-Saëns, performed by the Cathedral Children’s Choir during 2026 Ordination Mass in Sioux Falls, SD.

The hymn invites us into deeper mediation of our Lord, particularly during Holy Communion of the Mass.

The lyrics translate as follows:
Hail, true Body, born
of the Virgin Mary,
having truly suffered, sacrificed
on the cross for mankind,
from whose pierced side
water and blood flowed:
Be for us a sweet foretaste
in the trial of death!

Hail, true Body, born
of the Virgin Mary,
having truly suffered, sacrificed
on the cross for mankind,
from whose pierced side
water and blood flowed:
Be for us a sweet foretaste
in the trial of death!

August 19th is the Feast (Memorial) of St. John Eudes - found in our stained glass windows! St. John Eudes was a tireless promoter of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He established the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (Eudists) for the formation of priests, as well as establishing the Order of Our Lady of Charity for vulnerable women.

"Father of mercies and God of all consolation, You gave us the loving Heart of your own beloved Son, because of the boundless love by which You have loved us, which no tongue can describe. May we render You a love that is perfect with hearts made one with His. Grant, we pray, that our hearts may be brought to perfect unity: each heart with the other and all hearts with the Heart of Jesus, and may the rightful yearnings of our hearts find fulfillment through Him: Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen."
-Collect from Saint John Eudes’ Mass of the Sacred Heart

"When it seems to you that your suffering exceeds your strength, contemplate My wounds," Jesus tells us, in the Diary of St. Faustina.

Jesus's hands bear the very wounds that redeem us, a reminder that suffering can be redemptive, when we trust Him.

When Jesus reaches out for you, how do you respond?

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The Benediction hymn, called ‘Tantum Ergo’ is extracted from the last two verses of the hymn ‘Pange Lingua,’ and was originally composed for Vespers (night prayer) by St. Thomas Aquinas. ‘Tantum Ergo (Sacraméntum)’ literally translates to ‘So great therefore a Sacrament,’ and focuses on the mystery of the Blessed Sacrament, how faith supersedes our human senses that cannot comprehend the mystery in the Host before us. In this moment, we contemplate the mystery of our Lord, His blessings upon us, and His true presence in the Blessed Sacrament.

English:
Down in adoration falling,
Lo! The sacred Host we hail,
Lo! o’er ancient forms departing,
Newer rites of grace prevail:
Faith for all defects supplying
Where the feeble senses fail.
To the everlasting Father,
And the Son who reigns on high,
With the Spirit Blest proceeding
Forth from each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing,
Might and endless majesty. Amen.

Latin:
Tantum ergo Sacraméntum
venerémur cérnui:
et antíquum documéntum
novo cedat rítui:
præstet fídes suppleméntum
sénsuum deféctui.
Genitóri, Genitóque
laus et iubilátio,
salus, honor, virtus quoque
sit et benedíctio:
procedénti ab utróque
compar sit laudátio. Amen.
