Good Afternoon!

Welcome back to our daily recap! Here are the events of the past 24 hours.

Regarding the scavenger hunt, turns out that each of the three color teams found an item in the scavenger hunt and we all received points. Which is actually the best outcome for team morale. We headed to worship right after dinner as usual and had another incredible worship service. Pastor Octavious spoke again about the significance and power of the Holy Spirit. He hammered down on the point that the Spirit gives us power in the face of uncertainty and with that power, we are able to start releasing what has been holding us back for living our lives for Jesus.

In perhaps the most moving moment of camp, our students got to come forward and pray with their peers and leaders. The moment was heavy (in a good way) and I firmly believe some important decisions took place. More than anything we want our students to take those next steps in their faith and truly to make it their own. One of the benefits of camp is that our younger students get to see their older peers make these changes in their lives and they get to learn from them. Make sure you look at the picture below, that is almost all of our students hugging each other after service and they were all just praying for each other. They were there for about 20 minutes and I had to literally pry them out of the worship center so they could reset the room.

We had group time and students were able to be the most vulnerable and say how they felt the Holy Spirit helped them release some things. I would highly encourage you to ask your students about it because almost every student had a unique response. Afterwards it was Jackson Mitchell and Renee Moxley’s time for the hot seat. Not a dry eye in the room during this time. Both of them are dearly special to us and have made their mark on Catalyst Student Ministry and we couldn’t be more proud to send them into the world as products of our ministry.

Our evening activity was the Lip Sync Battle! That video is posted on our ccfsm instagram! I’m proud to report that we won that event too (we have NEVER won this event) I’m ALMOST 😉 getting to the point of embarrassment because we have won almost every event ha! But I’m not quite there yet and things didn’t change today! After our biscuits and gravy breakfast we had our God time, we had the best event of the week with the Mud Obstacle course. We won 3 of the 5 races! Safe to say we are going to be bringing those Champion T-shirts home with us! The rest of the afternoon was spent at the lake tubing, running the water obstacle course, and just floating around.

We are excited the we have a fun evening ahead but also looking forward to seeing all of you! Be praying for us tonight that we finish strong with an amazing session this evening and that other life change and conversations can happen. We know God is not done with us yet.

Good Afternoon!

Welcome back to our daily recap! Here are the events of the past 24 hours plus what is to come!

What a night! Like I mentioned yesterday, I got the opportunity to teach on night #3. I feel incredibly honored and privileged to be invited to do this. My lesson was on the character of Simon of Cyrene who was the man who helped Jesus carry his cross. I choose that character because of the theme, ‘Never will be the same’ and through my study of Simon, it was clear he left that interaction with Jesus changed him. In the Gospel of Mark, the Apostle Mark mentions that Simon had two sons, Alexander & Rufus. In the Book of Romans, Paul acknowledges a man named Rufus along with his mother.

The Apostle Mark is connected to the church in Rome as a secretary and interceptor for the Apostle Peter. So it is highly possible that Mark, Peter, and Rufus all connected in someway. If this is the same Rufus that Mark acknowledges in his Gospel than Simon’s divine appointment that he had with Jesus changed everything. It created generational change that rippled through Simon’s family and it drastically changed the world. The irony of this that only God can take these moments and do is that Rufus and his family experienced harsh living conditions due to the Romans. Now because of this interaction, this moment, Rufus and his family ended up being important figures in the Church of Rome or the people representation of who oppressed the Jews.

After the message we worshipped and went to group time. It was Katelyn Cottrell’s time to be in the hot seat. Katelyn is very clearly loved amongst our students. She has been a constant in our ministry and we feel very fortunate to have had her around and affecting our students in a positive way. We left the room and headed to the sand volleyball courts to play our favorite camp game, Kajabe Can Can. Students take pieces of rope with knots on the end of them and you run around a bundle of trash cans. If you touch a trashcan or drop a piece of rope, you are out. Last student standing wins. I’m VERY pleased to report that we have a group of champions! Our high school girls won in a landslide, we actually had five girls finish in the top five! Jackson Mitchell brought home the gold in the high school boys round and Jonah Martin took 2nd in the middle school boy round. FInally, Henna Ahrenholtz brought home the ultimate prize for 1st overall place to break the sudden death tie.

We woke up the today to a waffle and breakfast sausage breakfast and our scheduled God time. I have loved seeing our students go out and spend intentional time with God, either doing it together or on their own. After they are done we all come together to hear what others have learned or observed and we try to answer any questions and encourage each other. Our rec time was a scavenger hunt across camp and we wait to see what the results are later tonight.

Safe to say, it has been another full day. Day 4 usually is the day we are starting to drag and energy levels are starting to get a little low. Please pray that our students won’t just push through but they will stay focused on growing with each other and going deeper with Jesus. Talk soon! 🙂

Welcome back to our daily recap! Here are the events of the past 24 hours plus what is to come!

One of the absolute best parts of camp is free time. Yesterday afternoon we got to spend all afternoon, tubing, paddle boarding, living it up on the water inflatable obstacle course, and in and out of the snack shack. One of the perks about camp is that while we get to have these elements of fun and silliness - real moments of our students being intentional with each other happen in and around these things. Students are truly spending time together while enjoying all of the things and it is cool to see new friendships starting to sprout and grow with others going deeper.

After free time, we had our orange chicken & fried rice dinner and we were off to worship. The other Student Pastor, Octavious spoke on the passage of Jesus feeding the 5,000. Our students took several observations to heart such as this reality that God doesn’t require our emotions, but He does require our devotion. He connected the boy who obediently gave over his sack lunch so that something amazing could be done.

Another observation is that God is asking us to give Him our ‘Yes’. This idea of being ready for when we are called into action or service on the behalf of another, all we have to do is say yes and participate faithfully and trust that God will do only what God can do. In our group time one of the most common comments was that sometimes we feel like we have missed these moments to lean in and there is some frustration & sadness that these moments were missed. It is easy to beat yourself up when you keep ‘missing’ God’s opportunities.

One of our graduated Seniors Renee Moxley opened up that she is afraid to step into these moments because she is scared that she will not speak wisely about whatever the topic is. You would have been amazed to see how many students to raised their hands and agreed with her. It was so cool to see our students comfort each other and to trust that God just requires our obedience and through experiences we will become more mature and knowledgable of how to share our faith. Our Senior in the ‘Hot Seat’ was Samantha Blair. Sam has only been coming to Catalyst for a year. But I have seen only a few students grow as much as she has this year. We love her!

After we left group time, we went and played glow and the dark capture the flag, which dare I say...intense :). We headed to bed after that and got ready for a full day. Today, we have again dominated the Recreation components of camp (our students are COMPETITIVE) Malakai Wallace and Tolley Blanchard scored high in the blob competition while myself and Kolson Rogers scored a perfect score. We also took first place in the water obstacle course relay. Safe to say we are winning! Before I wrap up, if you get this before worship tonight, I get the opportunity to speak tonight. Good Afternoon!

We are here at Eagle Sky and we are off and running! What I love about camp is that they always keep us moving. Right from the second we arrived, we have been busy! Let me share with you a recap!

We arrived, got settled, and headed off to our first meal at camp. We always have a great pizza dinner the first night we are here and this year didn’t disappoint. They have a brand new pizza oven that they are breaking in this year and I think it has taken the pizza to the next level. Right after dinner, we head to our first worship session. Because we have a smaller week, they put up some pipe and drape to make the worship room a pinch smaller which I think helps make it feel fuller.

We had a great opening worship set and Pastor Stevie gave the opening night message on the woman at the well. Our theme for the week is ‘Nothing Was the Same’. All centered on stories of people who had an interaction with Jesus and was never the same after they left that interaction. This story is a great opener for that theme because there are several elements of the story that are so impactful and relatable to our students. Pastor Stevie explained the cultural context of what it would mean for Jesus to be traveling through Sychar (in the region of Samaria) as well as the life that this woman had lived.

This woman had been avoided, outcasted, and shamed because of the life she had lived. Yet Jesus went out of His way to meet this woman and because of the interaction she had with Jesus and who He revealed himself to be, changed everything. After worship we went into our large group room and we were able to talk out the message with the discussion questions we were provided. Something of a tradition we have started, we have a 30 minute period of time where have one of our graduated seniors sit in the ‘Hot Seat’ and share with us some encouragement and how other students have impacted them. Then the students respond and share how that student has changed their life. Our first senior was Dane Carey. Dane is incredibly funny, Biblically knowledgable, and one of the best friends someone can have. We had many students step up and share those things with Dane and we ended the session in a big group hug and praying for Dane.

After that we headed to the Island party where you see pictures of the Foam Pit and a dance party where we were able to just live it up for the evening. We headed to bed around 11:30 and slept soundly until we woke up to a pancake, bacon and egg breakfast. We just finished morning rec where we DOMINATED a game called steal the bacon. We are having the best time and now its time for some free time! Time to get out there! Talk to you all soon! 🙂
