Who is your best friend? Aristotle notes that there are three types of friends: those of utility, pleasure, and virtue. In the Christian understanding, truly virtuous friendship continues into heaven because the two people have spurred each other on to holiness. Learn more about virtuous friends here:

In the Old Testament, God commands that the Israelites harvest a "first fruit" every year and offer it to him. This means that the first food coming forth from the earth went to the Lord, not to the people.

This feast was designed to establish a greater trust in God - if you give over the first fruit to him, you need to trust that the rest of the harvest will be plentiful.

Today, we are encouraged to tithe, or give a tenth, to God and charitable organizations. St. Matthew's family, do we give the first tenth we receive each month? Or do we give from our excess? Consider offering up that first fruit to God to establish greater trust in him!

Pope Leo XIV used his message for Trinity Sunday to emphasize that the mystery of the Holy Trinity reveals God's life as a communion of love that extends to all creation. Speaking at the Angelus on May 31, the pope reflected on Jesus' encounter with Nicodemus, explaining that "every creature is made for communion, relationship and encounter." He warned that "division, polarization and contempt for diversity bring destruction, sadness and barrenness to the world," contrasting this with the Spirit of communion that "opens the heart to new truths and to true renewal."

After the Angelus, Pope Leo acknowledged the month-long prayers for peace offered throughout the Church during May, traditionally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. He prayed that "Divine Wisdom enlighten the consciences of those in authority" toward achieving "a just and lasting peace." The pope also marked Italy's 25th National Day of Relief, expressing closeness to the sick and thanking those who promote "a culture of solidarity and care."

As was often the case, their story was fully told by their executioner, a man who later received baptism because he was so impressed by the courage of the men he killed. He sought out Pope Damasus and told him the story.
