Think about a relay race for a moment. When the first runner hands off the baton, he doesn't stop running because the race is over. He stops running because his portion of the race is finished—and now it's someone else's turn to carry it forward. The second runner isn't trying to outdo the first runner or take credit for what he did. He's continuing the same race, toward the same finish line, as part of the same team.

That's the picture Jesus gives His disciples in John 14:12–14. Jesus is going back to the Father, but His work continues—first through His disciples, and now through us. Just before arriving in Jerusalem for the Last Supper, Jesus tells His disciples the Parable of the Minas (Luke 19:11–27) because they believed He was going to Jerusalem to seize the throne and establish His reign immediately (Luke 19:11). But Jesus uses the parable to radically reset their expectations and teach them a crucial lesson about what lies ahead: He is leaving them, going to the Father to receive His Kingdom, and will return as King to establish His reign (John 14:1-3). But there’s another important part of the story: What are His followers supposed to do while the King is away?

Jesus taught that His servants are entrusted with responsibility during His absence—and that faithfulness matters when the King returns. Entering His Kingdom is by faith alone in Christ alone, but the privilege of sharing in His rule is connected to faithful service. When the King returns, what will He find? Will you be among those who have faithfully stewarded their Christian life and are rewarded with the privilege of co-reigning with Him—or like the servant who wasted what the King entrusted to him?

What is your distinguishing mark?

A police officer has a badge. An athlete wears a jersey. A company has its logo. These marks instantly tell you who they are and who they belong to. But what about followers of Jesus? Jesus says our unmistakable mark isn't a cross around our neck or a church membership card. It’s our love for one another.

We will receive Christ’s love.
We will reflect Christ’s love.
We will reject the pride that hinders His love.

Hours before the cross, the disciples were locked in a prideful standoff over who was the greatest. In response, Jesus didn't lecture them—He picked up a towel, poured a basin of water, and knelt on the floor to wash their feet. He didn't reject their desire for kingdom greatness; He simply showed them that in His coming kingdom, greatness is marked by a towel and basin.

The words we listen to shape our days. But the words of Jesus? They hold your eternity! In life, words are cheap and promises are easily broken. But the words of Jesus? They are the very words of God the Father!

This Sunday (7/12), we are diving into John 12:44–50 to unpack Jesus’ final, urgent public plea. In a world where everything is up for renegotiation, Jesus brings an unalterable decree from the Father Himself: Whoever believes in Me passes instantly and permanently from darkness into eternal life!

Do you still wonder if there's something more you have to do in addition to believing? Are you unsure if you've believed enough, or believed long enough? The message Jesus delivers carries the full, unbending authority of the Father's saving will! Hope to see you tomorrow. -Mark

At the close of Jesus’ public ministry, John’s Gospel pulls back the curtain on two heartbreaking spiritual tragedies. On one side was the crowd: people who saw undeniable miracles but were locked into hardened unbelief. On the other side was a group of leaders who actually believed in Jesus but valued their social safety so much they kept their faith hidden in the dark.
