I don’t know much about St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker who won the MLB Homerun Derby tonight, but one thing stood out to me tonight. In the middle of intense pressure, with what seemed like 99% of the crowd cheering against him, he remained calm, composed, and focused—and that calmness led to victory.

That’s a powerful reminder for us as believers. The enemy will always try to intimidate us with pressure, fear, and opposition. But we don’t have to panic. We don’t have to be shaken. We can stand firm, trust God, and remain at peace, knowing He is fighting for us.

Don’t let the noise around you become louder than the voice of God within you. Calm confidence in the middle of chaos is often where God brings the greatest victories.

I’ve been told more than once, “Pastor, you don’t have to get so excited when you preach.”

The truth is… I’ve tried.

I’ve told myself before a service, “Just stay calm. Teach the message. Don’t get too passionate.”

But then I start talking about Jesus. I start thinking about where He brought me from. I look across the room and remember that every person sitting there has an eternal soul. I remember that someone’s marriage could be restored, someone’s addiction could be broken, someone’s depression could be lifted, and someone’s eternity could be changed by the power of the Gospel.

And somewhere between the introduction and the invitation, the passion comes out.

It’s not something I manufacture. It’s something I can’t contain.

Jeremiah said it best:

“But if I say, ‘I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name,’ His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.” (Jeremiah 20:9)

Preaching has never been about putting on a performance. It’s about proclaiming a living Savior.

So if my voice gets louder, if I get a little animated, or if I pace the platform more than I planned… it’s simply because I still believe this Gospel has the power to save, heal, deliver, and transform lives.

Depression is real, but it does not have to become your identity.

The Bible never ignores the reality of deep sorrow. Elijah wanted to give up (1 Kings 19). David often cried out from the depths of despair (Psalm 42). Even Paul spoke of being burdened beyond measure (2 Corinthians 1:8). Yet in every case, God met them where they were and led them forward.

Conquering depression biblically doesn’t mean pretending you’re okay. It means refusing to let your emotions have the final word. God’s Word has the final word.

Sometimes victory begins with a simple prayer when you don’t feel like praying. Sometimes it looks like opening your Bible when your mind says it’s pointless. Sometimes it means worshiping through tears instead of waiting until you feel joyful.

The enemy wants to isolate you, but God calls you into fellowship.
The enemy speaks hopelessness, but God speaks promises.
The enemy reminds you of your past, but God reminds you of your future.

Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

If you’re in a difficult season today, don’t give up. Keep praying. Keep reading His Word. Stay connected to other believers. Keep showing up, even when it’s hard. God is able to restore joy, renew strength, and bring beauty from ashes.

Depression may be part of your battle, but through Christ, it does not have to be the end of your story.

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul?… Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him.” — Psalm 42:11
