“The Holy Spirit enters into hearts with the Word. It is not the people who preach the Word who fill it with Spirit and life; Rather, the Word itself is the power of God unto salvation for all who believe it. As much as God's Word is in a sermon and teaching, that much Spirit is there, teaching through the Word.” — Hermann Haccius

“Jesus was at the table in the house … ” What seems to be an insignificant description of time and place in Matthew’s gospel was hardly that to the writer, because that house and table were Matthew’s own. Given what we know about this former tax collector’s life, it was a miracle that Jesus wanted to dine with him, let alone call him as an apostle and appoint him as an evangelist. Then again, such extreme grace was and is nothing new for Jesus, who “came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

“True faith is the faith that causes men who do not trust in any sort of spiritual asset of their own to take their refuge in Jesus Christ.” — Bo Giertz: “The Shepherd’s Letter”

“There are no depths in my life where Christ has not already come to meet me, no depths to which He has not been able to give meaning by surrounding them with love and making them the place where He visits me and brings me back home.”

Jesus gives His church the command to make disciples of all nations by means of baptizing them in the Triune Name of God and teaching them to observe all that He’s given them. History reveals that those in the church haven’t always carried out this “Great Commission” in the right way. God grant in our own day that we don’t repeat the sins of the past, but rather follow the Holy Spirit’s lead to make disciples by preaching Christ’s gospel and loving our neighbor.

“He is seated forever at the right side of God the almighty Father and from there He sees all things, the ruling Christ sees [all that] is happening in the world.” (From: “The Heliand: The Saxon Gospel”)

“When Christians celebrate holidays, they are not just memorial celebrations. We aren’t just celebrating the memory of Pentecost. The Spirit is with us as a living, giving Lord, a river of life from God Himself that perpetually flows to us and fills us up again.” – Bo Giertz

“Faith. No word in the Christian religion is used more frequently and more carelessly. Do you still know what faith is? It is that strange, God-given, Spirit-born power in your life, bought for you by the blood of the Son of God, which rests on the merit of the world’s Redeemer and refers all the questions of time to the answers of eternity. It is surrender. It is the end of your fears. It is the final answer to your questions. There is nothing beyond it. With it, you stand in the presence of God.” (O.P. Kretzmann: “The Road Back to God”)

To celebrate the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ is to rejoice in His eternal kingdom. But, if the kingdom, the power and the glory are truly His, then why doesn’t it seem like it in our lives? Or does the fact we have our doubts about His reign reveal a fundamental flaw in our understanding of what His kingdom is all about? For it is not by a display of power, but rather humility, not majesty but meekness, not by force but by forgiveness, that Christ’s kingdom now comes.

“[We] now have a Friend in heaven who knows all that earth and time and pain can do to man. The Ascension did not take Jesus away. It brought heaven near. In the realm in which He now reigns, time and space have no meaning. There is no up and down, no near and far, no darkness, and no distance in the world of faith. He is as near as yesterday’s prayer, today’s joy, and tomorrow’s sorrow. His homecoming has made heaven a home for us who still walk far from home.”

Our Lord tells the disciples, “I will not leave you as orphans,” repeating the promise He’d already given His church back in Isaiah’s day when He told them: “I will never forget you.” Now, He tells you: “See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.” Whatever He has done with His hands, whether it be His work of creating, redeeming, or sanctifying, it is YOU who are in His mind and upon His heart.

“Can a mother forget her nursing child and not show mercy to the son from her womb? Even if these women could forget, I will never forget you. Look, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.” (Isaiah 49:15-16)
