Wednesday night someone in our Hebrews class asked a question I haven't stopped thinking about. How do you know whether you're living in God's house as hired help or as His child?
Start by listening to how you pray.
Hired help prays like someone asking for wages. "I haven't done enough for God to listen." "Maybe if I serve more, He'll answer." A child talks to the Father and expects to be heard, because he lives there.
Then ask where that belief came from. Some of us learned how to see ourselves from a broken relationship or something somebody said years ago, and we carried it straight into prayer. I've done it too.
Hebrews 3:6 says Christ is a Son over His own house, "whose house are we." He built that house out of people, and you are part of it.
And when you fall short, hold on to this: conviction leads to repentance, and shame leads to separation. A son or daughter can be corrected in the house without being sent out of it.
Next Wednesday we keep going in Hebrews 3 and 4 on Zoom. If you'd like to join us, send me a message and I'll get you the link.
