Volunteers from the LH Youth Group go to CAM every month. Our next date is Sept 19th! Make plans to join us. For more info contact Katie Myers
At CAM, there are no appointments—people simply walk through our doors with urgent needs, hoping someone will help. Sometimes the solution is simple. Other times, it takes weeks or even months to help someone overcome the barriers, keeping them from moving forward. One week awhile back, as heavy rains and flooding swept through our community, our staff worked through difficult conditions to continue serving clients. With roads becoming dangerous, we decided to close just one hour early so our team could get home safely. Just as we were preparing to lock the doors, a young woman rushed in, visibly upset. She needed help obtaining an ID—a process that is often one of the most difficult services we provide; we call this service ID recovery.
It would have been understandable to ask her to return the next day. Instead, our team stopped and listened. We learned she already had her DPS appointment scheduled for the following morning (that in itself is tremendous as it can take months to get an appointment) and had almost everything she needed. She was only missing one document and needed help paying for her ID. Janet, one of our team members, helped the client to realize she likely had that document in an email on her phone, as a receipt from the Social Security office and patiently searched with her.
However, the young woman was so overwhelmed she couldn't find the receipt she needed on her phone, and everyone felt rushed. Janet simply said, "Let's pray together." After they prayed, and calmed down, they searched again—and found the document. CAM copied the receipt, provided the check for her ID, and sent her on her way. As she reached the door, she turned around with a huge smile and said, "Thank you! Because of your help, I can accept the job I've been offered. I just needed my ID." Then she joyfully shouted, "I'm getting a job!"
That's what CAM does every day. We don't just solve problems—we remove barriers, restore hope, and help people take the next step toward a brighter future. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation, one act of compassion, and one team member that chooses to stay a little longer.
