Forgiveness doesn’t always make the hurt disappear immediately.

Corrie Ten Boom once described her struggle with forgiveness, and the advice she received used a ringing church bell to explain why painful feelings can continue even after we’ve chosen to forgive. Sometimes the bell is still ringing—we just have to stop pulling the rope.

We love receiving forgiveness. Giving it? That can be a little harder.

It’s easy to say we forgive until someone inconveniences us, disappoints us, or doesn’t meet our expectations. Sometimes the smallest moments reveal just how much we want grace for ourselves—but struggle to give that same grace to others.
