On May 31, 2026, IDF forces seized Beaufort Castle โ a 900-year-old Crusader fortress perched atop a ridge in the Nabatieh district of southern Lebanon, six kilometers from Metula, Israel. The Golani Brigade, Maglan Commandos, and Yahalom Combat Engineers fought for the position. Then they went underground.
What they found is not a tunnel. IDF forces documented living quarters, shower facilities, restrooms, and kitchens. They found a fully equipped surgical operating room. Water and electrical infrastructure runs throughout the complex. The weapons caches include anti-tank missiles, gr***de stores, and ammunition alongside anti-aircraft defense arrays positioned to protect the entrance shafts. IDF says Hโzbollah fired over 400 rockets from this position during the current conflict, plus drones and shoulder-launched missiles at advancing Israeli troops. This was not a hiding spot. It was a forward operating base.

The purpose, per IDF intelligence, was what they call the โ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ญ๐ฆ๐ฆ ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฆ๐ด๐ตโ plan โ using Beaufort Ridge as a command hub for an invasion of Israelโs Galilee Panhandle. The ridge gives line-of-sight surveillance over the entire Litani River valley and directly into northern Israel. Israel held Beaufort Castle from 1982 to 2000, then withdrew as part of its Lebanon pullback. Hโzbollah moved in immediately and spent the next quarter-century building what is now being called one of the most significant terror infrastructure discoveries of the war.
The IDF intends to demolish the entire complex once the intelligence-gathering phase is complete.
